ROBIN WAS BROUGHT out of his thoughts when he heard his name being called. he looked up to see the whole class and the teacher look at him expectantly.

"uh, yes sir?" robin asked, trying to figure out what was going on. mr johnson sighed and motioned to the board, "what's the answer to the equation?"

robin looked at the board and immediately froze. he was busy in his thoughts for half the lesson that he understood nothing, let alone the equation on the board.

"x equals six." he heard her voice whisper to him. he gulped before sitting up, "x equals six?"

me johnson looked surprised for a moment, looking at jaelin who was scanning the board, looking like she was trying to figure it out herself.

he eventually gave in and nodded, "well done. x does equal six. now.."

the rest of the class turned their attention back to the teacher which made robin let out a breath of relief. he looked to his left, seeing jaelin laugh to herself before turning to him, "what would you do without me hm?"

he shook his head slightly, "probably still be in middle school annoying gwen." the two chuckled at the thought.

"why were you spaced out anyway? something wrong?" she whispered to him with a frown, knowing he's been doing it a lot recently.

"it's nothing, i promise. don't worry that pretty head of yours." he shrugged before continuing on his worksheet.

jaelin was silent after that and looked away, already feeling her cheeks burning up. she hated how his little compliments could make her act like this.

she would be lying if she said she didn't enjoy it.

but she also knew it wasn't nothing. robin doesn't know it, but every time he would respond to her worries, he'd throw in a compliment to divert her attention away from him.

"i'm not an idiot, robin. seriously, are you okay? we can always skip second if you want to." jaelin whispered to her best friend in concern.

"i'm being for real, jae. it's nothing bad, don't worry. seriously." he gave her a reassuring smile before going back to his own work.

jaelin decided it was best to leave it alone for now, not wanting to pry into anything. robin told her practically everything ever since they became friends where they were younger, so if it really was nothing bad, then she believes him.

ONCE JAELIN BID her goodbyes to robin, she closed the door behind her, locking it. she looked around her house to see it tidied up a bit more. her mother was gone and she didn't see the blanket and sippy cup anywhere.

she took of her shoes and walked towards the counter, seeing a note.

went to work just after you left. i'll be gone till tomorrow morning, here's some money so you can buy some food from the grab n go.

- love, mom

she saw a couple five dollar notes under the note and stuffed it into her pocket. she then went to her room and took off her bag, flopping down onto her bed.

she so badly wanted to take a nap, but she was hungry and she knew nothing was in the pantry besides cereal and air.

so with that, she got up and fixed her appearance up a little before heading out to the store.

THE WALK THERE only took about five minutes, which was why the grab n go was practically her third home. second was robins, obviously.

she opened the door and was greeted by various students inside and outside the store. she looked to her right and saw the pinball machine being occupied by none other than vance hopper.

her and vance weren't the bestest of friends, but vance saw her as a little sister and vice versa. although he wouldn't verbally say it, he did care for her just a little bit more than others.

"hey vance-"

"shut the fuck up he's trying to beat his high score!" his friend from the other side of him rolled his eyes at jaelin who scoffed.

she was about to reply but vance beat her to it. "don't you ever tell her to shut up, dickwad." he spoke as he kept his eyes on the game.

the friend stood awkwardly, eyes focused on the game instead of apologising. "as for you, covey, shut the fuck up." vance told her, but a teeny bit less harsh.

"yeah yeah whatever," she put her arms up in defence, "hope you beat your high score hopper." she rolled her eyes jokingly before turning around to walk away.

"i will, don't you fucking worry. see ya, kid." vance replied, still focused on the game.

she wondered around the store, picking up things she could afford with the money she had. that was until she spotted a familiar blond in the same aisle as her.

"finn?" she called out, walking towards him. he looked up at his name and saw her. "jaelin?" he instantly smiled as they both hugged.

"i thought you were at baseball tryouts?" she asked as they pulled away. "yeah i already tried out." he nodded.

"no way, really?! how'd it go?"

he rubbed the back of his neck, "yeah it was okay. i think i did pretty good."

"oh please, don't be so humble. you're definitely gonna get in. if you don't, i'll sue." she laughed.

"you fucked with my game!" vance's voice shouted. jaelin and finney froze before rushing over to the scene. jaelin gasped as she saw vance carving something with a knife into a beat up boys' arm.

everything happened so fast; the police came and grabbed vance and took him into the police car. jaelin was hesitating on wether or not to go after them and tell them not to take him.

finney noticed the way she shifted on her feet, and put a hand on her shoulder. she looked at him and he shook his head in response, silently telling her that she couldn't do anything.

the girl sighed. she hated knowing she couldn't do anything, especially for the people she cares about.

unbeknownst to the two, or anyone else, this was only the start to a series of unfortunate events. and it wouldn't stop anytime soon.
