I woke up and looked around. It was sometime in the early morning. I laid in bed for a couple of minutes before I finally got up. Everett was still asleep but everyone else was gone so I assumed the rest were already up.
When I was leaving the room Ollie walked past me so I asked him, "What's up?"
"Nothing much. I'm going to get some sleep since I was up all night standing watch." He replied.
"See anything?"
"Just some police cars passing by and some guy sneaking around." He said while walking away.
I entered the room we usually hang out at and sat down next to Hannah. I grabbed a couple of protein bars to eat and asked, "How are you?"
"I'm happy it's the last day of this. Tomorrow morning the heat will be over." She replied.
"I know. Where's Molly?"
"Out scavenging."
I took a bite of the bar before asking, "How's Everett been?"
"He misses his parents who are probably staying at a hotel since they were locked out of town." She explained.
"What are his parents like?" I asked.
"They're very nice. They don't fight, aren't controlling or overprotective, and don't have any strict rules."
I finished eating my bar and grabbed another and opened it.
"How are things between you two if you don't mind me asking?" I asked.
"Things are still good. Everett did tell me he felt like he wasn't doing enough to protect me. I told him he's up against 7-foot tall people with claws so what he's done for me is enough." She explained.
"He put in his fair share of work during this week. He helped come up with plans, fight anthros and so on. He also got the most injured to protect us." I replied.
"I told him that and he felt a bit better knowing he's doing fine caring about me and everyone else."
There was a knock at the front door and we both went quiet.
"Hey, it's Molly," Molly explained from behind the front door. I let her in and she stepped inside. She placed her backpack down and opened it up. She took out a cake and some stuff for drinks.
"Why did you get all this?" I asked.
"Tomorrow is the end of the experiment so I figured we could celebrate tonight. " She happily said while placing everything on a table.
"Thanks, that's gonna be great to have." I was thankful.
She smiled at me before sitting down and turning on the TV to look for a movie to watch. I sat down next to her and she picked this post-apocalyptic film called 'Irradiated Fever'.
The hours went by as we watched different movies at the lowest volume. It was all we could really do to pass time. When it was around 8 pm we all decided to drink and eat cake. It was this chocolate cake that was really good. I've never had anything like it back at the orphanage, so this was especially amazing when paired with why we were celebrating.
I asked the group, "What do you guys think about all this being over?"
"I'm fucking happy," Everett answered after taking a sip of his drink. "getting clawed, bitten, chased, and sleeping in uncomfortable places has been awful."
"It sucked, but at least this was an interesting experience." Hannah chimed in.
Ollie finished his drink and added, "Yeah, it was interesting. It was a bit fun as well, this is something that doesn't happen that often."
