Colin's POV
Alba crumples onto the floor, shaking, and I glower at Precious. How does Tristan stand her? I mean...she's not exactly the prettiest thing around and she doesn't have a glowing personality to balance it out.
"Alba, Sweetheart, are you alright?" Roger asks worriedly, checking her over. Alba's eyes are blank, and I can't get into her head.
Because she doesn't want you there, moron.
"Let go of me." Alba says flatly and I jump, looking down at her. "Let. Go." Alba repeats, her voice just as flat as it was the first time. I swallow nervously as I let her go...your mate can't hit you, right? Alba stands very still for a moment, before slapping me as hard as she can. My cheek stings before her hand has even moved, and I watch her own cheek go a violent shade of red. I guess if you hit your mate, you hurt yourself too. I rub my jaw as I look at Alba; she might look tiny, but her slaps hurt. A lot.
"Alba!" Precious trills, sounding horrified.
"What?" Alba snaps, her eyes never leaving my face. Life is starting to creep into her beautiful green eyes; but not the life I want to see. Hurt, betrayed, angry...defeated. And it's my fault.
"Why did you slap Colin?" Precious demands and Alba locks her eyes on mine.
"Because he lied to me." She replies simply, staring at me with more hate than I thought my mate would ever look at me with. Her green eyes move from mine in disgust, and I feel sick with myself. Why didn't I tell her? Tell her I knew exactly what Jack Emmory was going to do, so I could take her away from it; keep her safe.
"Alba, I can explain." I plead as she turns away from me, grabbing at her arm; she flinches away and looks up at me with furious tears in her eyes.
"Don't touch me, Colin McGrath - don't even look at me!" She shouts and I drop my hand; a lump forming in my throat.
"Alba, please..." I trail off and she blinks rapidly; so determined not to cry, so determined to be strong.
"Please what?" She spits. "Please forgive me for lying to you? Please forgive me for not telling you I knew what Crusher was going to do to your family? Please forgive me for letting you think you could trust me and then snatching it all away?" The closer to the end she gets, the louder she gets as she shrieks at me.
"You can trust me, Alba." I breathe and she shakes her head angrily, wiping her eyes.
"Prove it!" She yells, throwing her hands in the air. "Do something and FIX it!" Her voice cracks and tears roll down her cheeks. "But you can't!" She screams, tears rolling down her cheeks. "You CAN'T fix it! No one can fix it! Crusher's gonnae come and he's gonnae start a fight and people I love are gonnae die, but YOU could have FIXED IT!" Alba shouts, tears streaming down her cheeks; I go to brush them away, hating seeing her cry, and she slaps my hand away.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!" Alba screams, pushing me away. "You could have stopped ALL of this, Colin McGrath, but you just LET it happen! You sat in Crusher's pack...did you know all this when you sat next to me in English? Huh? Have you always known?" She demands as she wraps her arms around herself. "Did you laugh at me behind my back?" She chokes; hugging herself tightly.
"Alba, it isn't like that!" I shout, hating how little she thinks of me after not even an hour with Jack bloody Emmory.
"Don't shout at her." Todd growls, putting an arm around Alba's shoulders protectively.
"This has nothing t'do with you." I snap and Alba stares at me like I'm an idiot.
You are an idiot, the little voice in my head reminds me coldly; and as I stare at the mate I've reduced to tears, there's nothing in me that wants to disagree. I am an idiot.
