Pillow Talk
Bruce awoke with an arm around Sallie;
The blanket curved over her growing belly.
He sat up slowly, rubbing his face,
and thought about how to proceed with this case.
In bed the night before, Sallie had come up with a game;
Told him to give up a secret, and she would do the same.
What could he tell her? Nothing about Rue.
But he'd had to tell her something, so he told her about Lou.
About how she'd bettered him and turned him to good,
and how her death had hurt him the way nothing else could.
When it came time for her secret, he held his breath;
But she just rubbed her belly and said,
"This was my only secret. The baby inside;
But now it's getting too big to hide."
Sallie was awake now, and as she sat up,
she put her feet over the bed and onto the rug.
But pulled them back up a with a shriek: "Spideeeeer! Eeeek!"
Bruce raced to her rescue and squashed the big bug
before it could get any closer to the rug.
"Nothing to worry about," he reassured.
"That spider won't move again - you have my word."
"I don't know why I screamed," Sallie said sheepishly.
"Why, the spiders were as big as kittens at Saint Loony's!"
"A spider's a spider." Bruce cleaned off his shoe.
Maybe her words were something he could tell Rue.
What was Saint Loony's?
It might require some digging to find out that.
Bruce kissed Sallie, excused himself with a promise
to return that night, and grabbed his hat.
He stopped at the desk to leave a note for Rue.
"Meet me in Tent City at half past two.
I'm staying at the house of Lou.
I have something for you."
