'The Legend of Sirens
There are many legends in the muggle world about the origin of mermaids and sirens. The earliest recorded sirens were found in Greece. The research in the wizarding world began and the evidence found over the years all point to the greek legend of Persephone's handmaidens. The mortal girls served the goddess Persephone, sang to her in sweet voices and played instruments to please her. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, the loyal handmaidens begged the gods for help to search for her. The goddess Demeter, Persephone's mother, gave half of them feathery wings to fly over the earth to search for the missing goddess. The other half received serpent-like tails and the ability to breathe under the water to search in the depths of the seas - but the search was vain as for Persephone had been imprisoned in the underworld. Heartbroken over the loss of herdaughter, Demeter lashed out against the innocent maidens who had failed to bring back Persephone. She cursed the maidens she had given wings to stay in their half-bird form - the start of the legends of veela - while cursing the ones with the serpent's tail to life an endless live in the depths of the seas. Both parts were connected through their beauty and their love for music. Demeter's curse holds another power to it - hearing their voices would bring men to insanity. Sirens were doomed to take people, willingly or not, to sea and their deaths...-
„They are totally up to something."
Cassie groaned and shut the book in front of her loudly. She was fast to put her potions homework on top of it, hiding the cover of the book she had taken from the restricted section. She was caught during her midnight search in the library only to read about the legends of sirens? She huffed and crossed her arms as she leaned back and looked at Skyler. At least she found the connection of sirens of the sea to veela interesting. If a veela and a wizard can have a child, could a wizard and a mermaid? But how would that work? Cassie started biting her nail as her stare left Skyler and moved to the table, deep in thought.
"Cassie," Skyler hissed and the brunette was pulled from her trance to look at her friend again, "are you even listening?" She blinked at her friend and Skyler groaned. Her eyes moved from Cassie's face to something behind her and Cassie turned around carefully.
James, Sirius, Remus and Peter were sitting at a table in the library close to them. Remus had his head in a book, Peter scribbled something on his parchment with a pout on his lips while James and Sirius were whispering. Cassie rolled her eyes and turned back to her friend.
„You're just being paranoid. They're just sitting there."
„You recognised where 'there' is, right? The library. And I know these looks on their faces."
Cassie frowned and looked again, scanning the faces of James and Sirius. Their whispers seemed harsh and just as she was about to turn back once again, Sirius raised his head. He caught Skyler's eyes and nudged James' arm who also looked up, catching Cassie's. She noticed Sirius slightly glaring at Skyler and she frowned. Remus and Peter noticed their friends' behaviour and both changed their attention from their tasks to the two girls. Cassie's eyes left James' and found the ones of Remus'. She smiled and softly waved to greet him. Remus raised his hand slightly with a smile as well. Skyler pushed Cassie's hand down and leaned closer to her.
"What are you doing?" she whispered in a jokingly scolding tune "I told you not to befriend the enemy." Cassie only shrugged and turned her attention back to her actual homework in front of her. "Hold up," Skyler said wit ha grin, "last time I said that you were defending yourself, telling me you two aren't friends at all. Has that changed?"
"I don't know. Maybe?" she sighed and looked over her shoulder only to find the table of the Marauders now empty. "I mean, he's nice and we're talking from time to time, but that's it."
