5. Formalities

After a week and a half and a short text conversation, I hadn't text him back, neither did he, and I wasn't planning on it. I feared the consequences, since I really liked the guy, and I couldn't stop thinking about him.

That Sunday was the day of the big Christmas party, which was more of a formal ball for everyone, so I needed to find something to wear, quickly. I texted Kate and Aidy, who came by my house to help me, or so I thought they would. All they did for the entire time was laugh and point to the places in my house where it would have been possible to have sex, but at least they were taking my mind off everything that was happening.

«Do you like this?» I asked, putting on a long, black dress, with long sleeves and a big neckline that went down almost to my belly button.
«That. Is. Beautiful» Kate said, making sure to enunciate every word.
«I love it» Aidy agreed, nodding.
«Okay, so now that we have the dress sorted out, I just need to- Why are you laughing?» I asked my friends, seeing them chuckling over something that I could not understand.
«Nothing, nothing» Kate shook her head. «Go put on your make-up!»

They pushed me into the bathroom, but I could still hear them laughing. Then, Kate called someone, and I couldn't understand who that was.

«Who are you talking to?»
«My cousin.»

She moved to another room, still chuckling a little, and resumed talking to the stranger on the phone.

«Aidy, what's happening? I don't like being in the dark.»
«Nothing is happening, we told you! Are you ready to go?»

I nodded, while putting on my earrings and my rings.

«Let's go, then.»

We arrived at a beautiful ballroom, or something that seemed like that, in a big building in the center of the Big Apple.

«There you are!» Conner smiled at Aidy, seeing her come up the stairs.

They hugged and left me and Kate alone, until she saw someone she knew and left me wandering in the hall by myself. I felt really out of place, that kind of social situation wasn't my type of social situation.

I approached the bar and ordered a margarita, just to heat things up a little, then started a conversation with Bowen.

«Uh... I don't want this to come out the wrong way, but there's a man who looks like a pedophile staring at you.»

Jack.

I turned around and our eyes met instantly, as I felt my hands shaking. I had to put down my cocktail, then excused myself to Bowen and walked over to him.

He was wearing a dark red tuxedo and had a single rose in his hand. He had cut his hair a little, but still had that weird yet attractive mustache on his face.

«What are you doing here?» I asked, genuinely surprised.
«She invited me» he answered, nodding in Kate's direction.

She put both of her thumbs up and started laughing.

«Well... welcome.»
«This is for you» he smiled, handing me the rose. «You look gorgeous.»
«Thank you so much.»

I didn't say anything else, as I seemed to have lost words.

«Wanna get a drink? I'll introduce you to my colleagues» I proposed. «So... I never told you my name, but I'll assume you knew it already?»
«You're kind of famous, you know?» he said, following me around the big room.

We both took a glass of champagne off a tray and walked around meeting people.

«Hey Lorne» I smiled at my boss.
«Who's this young fellow?»
«He's a friend. Jack, this is my boss, Lorne Michaels.»

They firmly shook hands and started talking about the show, the world, politics, and other things I didn't really wanna hear that night, so I searched around to find Kate and Aidy.

«You bitch» I grinned at the blonde.
«Aww, you guys really do make a good couple» she teased. «You can thank me later.»
«I don't know what to do! Should I flirt with him or just act friendly?»
«Whatever you do, he's madly in love with you.»

I turned around and saw him staring at me again.

«Okay, fine. I can do this, can't I?»
«Go get that man!» she shouted, giving me a little slap on the butt.

I walked back to Jack, who had just finished his glass of champagne, but stayed quiet.

«Wanna go outside a little?» he proposed, offering me his arm.

We went out on the little garden inside the building, hand-in-hand, in complete silence. I was so nervous I could feel the sweat on my face, which I hoped wasn't that noticeable.

«I'm sorry I didn't text you or call you after last week» I finally said.
«Don't be.»
«I just got worried and scared about all of this.»

He put his hands on my shoulders and gave me a small kiss on the cheek.

«Can I take you out on a date? A proper one.»
«I'm leaving next week, though, on Monday. I can't not go back home right now, my cousin is ill, my nana is very old-»
«Tomorrow. I'll take you to my favorite restaurant, then you can decide if you like me or not.»
«Jack, I like you. I like you so much it scares me.»

He didn't say anything more, and let his gestures speak for him. He took my head in his hands and kissed me, passionately.

«You're cute» I said, seeing him embarrassed and shy after he had broken the kiss.
«Not bad yourself.»
«You should totally come to the Christmas party.»
«Isn't this it?»
«This is just a formality. Wait 'till you see the real party. It's Saturday after the episode, in the offices.»
«So if that's the party, what's this?»
«I don't know, but sure as hell this is not it. I don't see Kate dancing on the table, or Melissa screaming the lyrics to every Christmas song to ever been created.»
«And what do you do at the Christmas party?»
«Drink, have fun. So, what do you think?»
«Fine» he chuckled.

He gave me a little kiss on the cheek, and we went back inside to talk to the others, especially Kate and Aidy, who were spying on me through the glass windows.
