Come Back to Me

You hated it when you couldn't go with him. You were strong, reliable, and everything in between... but no matter how hard you tried you couldn't get any info on the task from Kite or anyone else. Even so, you were at least able to pry a little bit of detail from him before he left, but it was not info you enjoyed hearing at all. He would be returning to NGL, and that was enough to make you worry immensely.

That was all the information you could weasel from the love of your life sadly. The nature of this task had him keeping it a secret from you, only promising to tell you after it was done. That implied that it was incredibly dangerous, which was why you couldn't go with him. It upset you greatly, but nothing could change his mind. You simply had to accept his duty and let him leave with only a kiss. He said it would be no longer than twelve days, so you remained in wait for him, hoping those days would pass quickly. That was what you hoped but... that was also what he told you about fifteen days ago.

To say you were anxious would be a bit of an understatement. You were downright terrified with a heart beat so strong your ribcage felt as if it would burst from the force of it. Three days overdue had you in a sleepless frantic state of being. You wouldn't even eat; only spending your time on his couch bouncing your leg in hopes that he would be home soon. Unfortunately, he was not, fay fifteen turning to sixteen, and soon into a seventeenth day. All of the violent 'what if' type of thoughts had laid claim to your mind, filling it with images of the worst possible scenario now. You hated it, and honestly started to believe it. It's been an extra five days, so it wasn't that far fetched for him to simply be dead.

That thought stuck in your mind the most. 'Kite' and 'dead' were not two words you wanted to hear in the same sentence, but with how long you had been waiting for him to come home, things had begun to look grim. Of course all you could do was cry by now, your cheeks streaked with tears cried silently, still waiting for his return. You were just about to give up on the waiting game by now with full intent of giving the Association an earful while running at top speed to get to NGL, but you didn't have to thankfully. An unexpected rattle of the front door jolted you from your thoughts. It was late, so it could only be one person opening the door at such an hour; a wave of relief washing over you when you saw him enter.

That relief was brief though, as when you saw Kite come inside, you found that he did not return to you in the same condition he left in. Your lover had torn clothing with the arm of his right sleeve tied around his shoulder in a bloody tourniquet, choppy hair in some sections, his hat was missing, skin covered in cuts and bruises, as well as having an incredible amount of blood dried to him that left him looking a mess. You genuinely wondered how he was even still standing. Yet, despite the damage displayed on his body, Kite looked out across the living room directly into your eyes and offered you such a sweet smile of relief.

"I'm... Home." He said weakly, breaking the stunned silence.

Your tears returned, but they were no longer silent. You let out your first weak whimper, your emotions soon spilling out of you as you lunged off of the couch and stumbled over to Kite, taking his weakened form into your arms and bringing your head into his neck. He slumped into you, clearly exhausted and worn completely, yet at ease now that he had returned to your embrace.

It took a moment for you to get your crying under control, but once you did, you had so many questions. With a gentle grip you repositioned Kite to look at him clearly, analyzing all his injuries as you spoke.

"What... What happened? What could have possibly happened for you to end up in such a state? And furthermore, why didn't you receive any medical aid!" You asked him in a flurry.

"The job was... A little more difficult than anticipated. Since I was already so late coming home, I focused only on finishing the task at hand before coming straight home to you. I knew you'd be worrying." He mumbled weakly.
