Warmth

Cold...

The drops in temperature had been getting more drastic. Days started at freezing, and by noon you would be granted a brief warm relief before it was all taken away again in only a few hours. Cold, chilly, anything other than warm really was the only thing you could feel. Warmth was something you had nearly forgotten the feel of as the days grew greyer and colder.

... Key word nearly.

Though most of the days were spent in the single digits, at moments that should be coldest, warmth is brought to you every night without fail. No matter where you were, it always followed, because he was your source.

...

It rained slightly, mixed with the formation of fresh, new snowflakes. A gentle slush poured quietly from the sky against the thin fabric of the tent. Though barely formed, the crystals within thick water droplets glittered in the dim light of a slowly dying fire. You sat with your knees to your chest at the open door of the tent, a sleeping bag draped over your shoulders while you absorbed what you could from the warmth of the fire. A chill ran down your spine, but you were waiting.

He hadn't come back yet.

Kite... was still gone. Even with the moon high in the sky he had still yet to return. It would be a lie to say you weren't worried. It was reasonable to be concerned, but you never truly needed to be. Your warmth always returned; a promise made just for you, by him. He always came back. He has never broken that promise to you.

Like clockwork, just when it seems the fire will go out on its own and leave you without warmth, footsteps could be heard before a cloaked figure emerged from the darkened forest. Wisps of silver hair fluttered out with the gentle breeze, seen only briefly before the fire was fully extinguished. Though it was dark, you had no need to worry. Your eyes adjusted quite quickly, and you soon found yourself enveloped in fabric and arms.

"Sorry I'm late." Kite mumbled quietly. "I got lost in documentation. I'm not quite used to it getting dark this early just yet."

He gently pushed you back into the tent with a chaste kiss to your cheek before he turned to secure the flap shut. A quiet hum came from you as you settled back onto the remaining sleeping bags and blankets, waiting for him to finish.

It was routine, and you watched comfortably as he discarded the cloak and any dirty clothing to a corner of the tent before he hauled up the remaining blankets, quickly making his way into the large sleeping bag you had already laid open for the two of you. Thick blankets were layered on top of you both, his arms coming around to pull you in close.

"You weren't too cold while you waited, right?" He asked you softly.

"Mmm... only a little." You replied in a tone just as gentle. "S' okay though. I know you'll always come back."

You were nuzzled up close to him, your hands occasionally playing with loose strands of his hair. Despite being out in the cold only moments ago, when you were bundled up like this, your shared warmth kept you both comfortable and cozy.

Kite let out a little huff, adoring how sweet you were.

"Yes. I'll always come back. Someone has to keep you warm." He replied playfully.

You stifled laughter, little puffs of air coming from your nose as you held it back. Your smile told him all though, and as you draped your arms on his shoulders he pulled you up a little. His hand held firm to your waist, and with slow, gentle movements, he tilted your head up just enough to capture a sweet kiss from you.

The dim glow of moonlight filtered through the fabric of the tent, giving a beautiful silver glow to the edge of his silhouette. You didn't admire him long, as you were far too lost in the comfort his kiss brought you. Warmth flooded you once more, and you forgot that you had ever been cold in the first place.

His forehead rested against yours once he parted from you, clinging to the memory of your lips against his. A hand cupped your cheek, and long sighs escaped you both.

"You're a miracle, you know that right?" You spoke sweetly. "You bring so much warmth to my life. Quite literally too."

He chuckled, pulling the blankets even tighter around you both. "That is all I hope to be for you."

"My everything?"

"... Yes." He huffed, an embarrassed little smile tugging on his lips. "Though those standards are quite high..."

"You already met them. You are my everything, just as you are. You don't even need to try."

He pulled you in close to his chest, hiding his growing smile from you with his chin resting atop your head. His heartbeat probably gave him away, but it was alright. His fingers trailed along your arm and back, momentarily taking in all that you were.

"You're so genuine..." He paused, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. "I love you. God, how I love you."

Flustered by each other, you both hid your silly little smirks from each other, though faint laughter could still be heard. Even as you grew more and more tired, you indulged in each other's care for just a moment more before you were too tired to move.

"... Thank you. For staying." You mumbled quietly, voice crackling with fatigue.

"I wouldn't dream of leaving." He replied, equally as exhausted.

Even as the temperature dipped, your warmth remained undisturbed. Home was wherever he went, his warmth granting you the peace of mind to rest easy wherever you were. The same went for him; you being his light that he always returned to.

He wasn't that warm of a person honestly. But when he held you close, your own warmth mingled with his. Nothing was comfier than keeping you in his embrace. You could both rest easy despite the cold.

It didn't matter when you had each other's warmth.
