The Project

It was finally time for that huge and much anticipated trip, backed by weeks of research that everyone struggled to find together. You sat in the back seat of a large van between Kite and Spinner, both of them eagerly showing you all the necessary information for the project to get you up to speed. The rest of the amateur hunters followed in a separate vehicle carrying additional supplies, the can you were currently in being graciously driven by Stick. That allowed for you to receive as much information as possible, seeing as you were absent for most of the external data collection.

"So basically, no one has seen this species of wildcat in decades, and now all of a sudden dozens have been recorded to appear on this remote island." Spinner concluded, pointing to a map on her own laptop.

"Which is why we're going to track them for a few months to get as much info as possible, then work on protective measures for the area until they're no longer endangered. This is a rare opportunity, so we must grasp it." Kite added on, clearly very passionate about the project.

You loved to see him expressing his passions, the glint in his eye bringing a smile to your face while you admired his dedication.

"And that's where I come in, right?" You hummed, waving around a camera.

"Correct. You'll cover most of the photo documentation." Spin nodded.

"Ah, this will be nice~. I'd much rather be snapping photos instead of snapping necks for a change." You joked.

Spin snorted at your comment before she laughed loudly while Kite shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips.

"Oi, we're here." Dinner pointed out, interrupting your thoughts as he pointed out the window ahead of him.

As stated, the van drove over a bumpy thin road that stretched out across a huge expanse of water that connected to the ocean, being the only access point to the island you were researching. The place was incredibly lush and alive with vegetation and plants you thought you'd never get the chance to see outside of books and pictures, a thick forest carpeting most of the land on the eastern quarter of the island. You watched in amazement until the vehicle settled to a stop in an open clearing and you were given the okay to get out, to which you eagerly climbed over Kite and leapt out of the passenger side door before he could even get the chance to open it for himself. The excitement you had for this project was almost comparable to Kite's after all, so you were the first to run and get started on the setup for the main campsite with stars in your eyes.

As everyone finally met in the middle of the clearing, the job of setting up sleep tents, research tents, and a campfire went by quickly and with ease. It took less than twenty minutes to get everything set up and organized, so once it was all together you offered to work on setting up the tech in the back of one of the vans in case you needed more advanced tools for the job. Considering you would all be here for a couple of months, it was best to make sure everything was in working order now rather than later.

While you were seated on the back of a van with open doors fiddling with some wires though, a tiny growl rumbled out from a nearby bush. Stopping your work, you watched the bush curiously until a tiny little sand coloured head poked out from the leaves, eyeing you with just as much curiosity. It was definitely one of the wildcats you came to observe so you dared not to move just yet. The info on it was still scarce, so you didn't want to frighten it.

The little wildcat pawed at the ground for a moment, then slowly approached where you sat. Another moment passed while you made eye contact with the tiny creature until it decided to hop up on your lap of all places, earning a gasp of surprise from you. It did not attack like you initially thought; rather it purred loudly instead while it headbutted one of your arms before lying down in your lap. You chuckled after you let out a sigh of relief, surprised by the immediate trust, and gently started to pet the little wildcat.
