Wednesday After School

Silveny crunches more Swizzlespice. If I don't come back, I think, I love you. Silveny stares blankly into my eyes. It is at times like these that I wish I was a telepath.

"I don't have anymore Swizzlespice," I tell her. She snorts and walks away from me. I sigh and turn over my shoulder only to see Uncle Fitz walking over to me.

There was always an awkwardness between us. Alvia and I know that Uncle Fitz and Mom used to date, and that Mom used to have a massive crush on him. We also know of the big fight between Uncle Fitz and Dad. Things didn't end great between the two of them. But they're still friends - they have to be.

"Um, are your parents here?" he asks me.

"They should be inside," I answer. He looks down. I look away into the distance.

Silence. We are thinking the same thing, and we both know it.

"You know I don't hate you, right?" I say. Uncle Fitz and I are now looking at the fields stretched out before us.

"You don't? You don't think it's weird that I used to date your mom and all?" By 'all' I know he means their break up, and every other mistake he made.

"No, of course not. You're very important to my mom, Uncle Fitz," I say. "You risked your life so many times just to bring Mom home to the Lost Cities. And you saved her so many times after that. I mean, that's pretty respectable." I know the stories all too well.

"She would probably still be there with a major headache thinking that she's human." I can see him revisiting that day in his memories.

"You're right about all of that," he says. Uncle Fitz pauses and his smile slowly falls from his face. "But she still chose-"

"You may not have married Mom, but you are her friend. That still matters."

"Not a stranger, and not her husband,"

"The difference between green and blue. Somewhere in the middle." There is a pause as he dissects that.

Finally, he realizes what it means.

"Teal"

We stay there for a few moments, and then Uncle Fitz finally turns to me and looks me in the eyes. I follow.

"I know things have always been a little weird between us, but I'd like to get to know you and your sister more, seeing that you are friends with Ivy and all."

"Sure. And, you know, all of that happened a long time ago, Uncle Fitz. People change." Uncle Fitz smiles.

"You sound just like your mom," he chuckles.

And with that, we part ways. But we'll see each other again soon, I think. Tonight is Pack Valiant's first show.
