13 | No heroes
"This ain't no place for no hero".
"Harvey," Jim called when he got out through the staircase exit on the roof.
He found his partner not too far, staring at the floor with a hunted look in his eyes. It took him a while to register Jim's arrival.
Alongside Jim was a rather confused-looking boy, who worked at the forensics department.
Jim searched the roof, expecting to see the Red Demon again. However, she wasn't there. "Why did you call us up here?"
The younger boy was asking himself the same question and searched behind them for more clues to the conundrum. Suddenly, the two Detectives heard him gasp loudly.
"Oh, my!" He grabbed Jim's arm. "Detective Gordon!"
"What is it, Ed?" Jim turned and finally spotted the Red Demon on top of the staircase exit, which he had walked through a minute before.
"Are you going to arrest me tonight, James?" Lilith asked, looking down at them.
"The Captain tried to lift the charges against you, but the Commissioner refused," Jim told her. After a moment of silence, he continued. "But no, I will not arrest you. Unless you do something to get arrested for".
The vigilante's eyes moved to the boy beside Jim. He stared at her with wide eyes while clutching a white mug close to his chest. She noticed the black question mark drawn on the mug. "And who are you?"
"One door leads to hell and ano— What? No," he chuckled awkwardly. Bullock rolled his eyes and sighed. "Ed. My name is Ed. Nygma".
"No need to be so nervous, kid. I'm not going to hurt you," Lilith reassured him. Ed's muscles lost some of their tension, but when she jumped down from the roof of the staircase exit, Ed jumped back behind Jim. "Unless... you did something that would make me wanna hurt you".
Ed raised his hands in front of him. "No. No. I would never—"
"The Goat kidnapped another girl," Bullock interrupted and the other three turned their attention to him. "Ember Copley. You know anything that could help?"
Lilith sighed. She hoped her hunch was right. "If this guy is doing everything exactly the same way as Milkie,... it may also be taking his victims to the same place".
Jim considered that for a second before he nodded and turned his head to face Bullock. "I told you I pulled the employee list from the agencies that do maintenance on the Copley's building. Okay, so four guys have called in sick since last week".
"The two suspects from the outer boroughs are cleared," continued Nygma. His breathing seemed to have gone back to normal. "Another is out of state, but apparently, it's unconfirmed, so..."
