Demelza Finds Out

Demelza and Ross were happy for all intense purposes. She still saw in her mind's eye Elizabeth in Ross's arms. It gutted her every time she thought of it. If it was not for her children she didn't know if she could ever have been with him again. She had just heard the news about Joan Chynoweth, they said she had a heart stroke and didn't think she would recover fully. Demelza wondered what it would mean. Would Elizabeth come back home to care for her? She was deep in thought when Ross caught up to her. Wrapping his arms around her, he kissed her neck. He noticed the hurt look in her eyes and realized what she was thinking. What had ever processed him to cheat on his beautiful wife?

"My love, what are you thinking of," he asked? Demelza said, "tis nonthin Ross," she gave him a false smile. "I am sorry, I should have realized what I had before I," he trailed off. Demelza said, "I just can't get the picture of you holding her out of my mind, wonderin if you said the same things to her that you say to me." "Never," Ross said, "what I mean is I never spoke words of love to her as I do you, I did not love nor do I love her." "She was your first love, I know you still love her for the way you look at her," she said. Ross then told her, "I loved her once, as well you knew, but that love has been gone for a long time. Have you ever had something that you thought you wanted and then once you had it, it was such a letdown? It wasn't what you imagined all that time. That is what being with her was like. I was trying to get back my youth but I realized once I saw you in London that my youth is not what I want or need. What I need is you and our children they are what truly makes me happy and I was a fool to forget that for what a tawdry affair."

Demelza said, "do you think she will come back now?" Ross had no idea what she was talking about, "she is married to George why should she come back here?" Demelza realized he didn't know of the heart stroke, so she told him. Ross thought a few minutes and told her she may come back to take care of getting her mother settled but I assume she will go back as soon as possible. Demelza just nodded. Ross took her hand and brought it up to her mouth. "Demelza, she has never meant what you do to me. You are my soul mate, the one person in this world that fate had given to me to protect, love, and cherish. I promise I will never be so foolish again." Demelza smiled a small smile, "I told you I forgave you and I do, but I just can't forget, that is where the issue lies." Ross cursed himself, he only hope the memory would fade in the future.

Elizabeth came to Nampara the next day. She asked for Ross and was informed he wasn't there. Demelza and her children were at the beach, neither of the ladies saw one another when Elizabeth made her way to the mine. Once Elizabeth reached it, she got off her horse and went to the mine office all the while watching the miners make sure there was no stone-throwing incident to follow. Ross and Dwight came out of the office. Ross said, "Elizabeth what do you want." She said, "Really Ross can we not have a little conversation?" Ross said, "I believe I told you about my feelings in the past conversations." Elizabeth said, "and I know you can't be serious, I know you want me you proved that to me in London." Ross thought is that what Demelza thinks also. God, I wish I wasn't so awkward around women. How can I get across to her that what happened in London means nothing to me, in fact, it proved to me that she wasn't the person I led myself to believe all that time in America. Then he said, "Elizabeth I don't know how to make it any planner to you I love my wife and I will never be so foolish again to risk losing her or my children." Elizabeth looked at Dwight and said, "all your children," putting her hands on her stomach. Ross glared at her he noticed that Dwight didn't seem to catch what she did. He looked at her with pure hatred. All my children both Jeremy and Clowance and any more MY WFE is willing to provide." Elizabeth took two steps back from the look on Ross's face, she knew she pushed him too far, knowing his violent tendencies she said, "the reason I came is I need help setting my mother up with care. I was wondering if you, Doctor Enys will help me." She congratulated herself on thinking of the excuse of Enys, she had no desire for him but maybe if she could make Ross Jealous. He would change his tune. Demelza and the children came walking up from the beach carrying some driftwood and treasures the children found. Ross went running down the steps. Elizabeth thought her ploy had worked until Ross ran right past her and went to his wife taking her load. Demelza put her head down, and whispered, "I didn't know you had company." Ross said, "she is here for Dwight." Then he saw Jeremy pick up a stone, and Demelza noticed at the same time. "Jeremy Joshua Poldark what are you doing?" Jeremy said, "I don't like her." Clowance not to be left out pick up some dirt. Clowance said, "I no ike." Demelza knelt down and quietly told them, "whether you like them or not we do not through things at people. It is not nice or polite." Jeremy said, "Papa did it last time." Demelza looked at Ross and stood up and put her hands on her hips, "Ross." Ross looked sheepishly at his wife, "well she deserved it," then noticing his wife's dark looks said, " I will not do it again." He looked at Jeremy and Clowance "we will not do it again will we children?" Both children shook their heads but both Ross and Demelza saw Jeremy stick his tongue out is Elizabeth. Clowance wrinkled her nose like she smelled something dirty. Ross started to laugh when he noticed his wife's death glare. He knelt and told the children it was nice to make faces at people even if they are mean. He looked to Demelza for her approval and once he got it and she turned her head, Ross whispered although you can be as mean as you want to her. Jeremy nodded and Clowance walked to her father's arms, he picked her up noticing the look from Demelza that said we will talk later.

Elizabeth glared at Clowance who did she think she was to go to Ross to be picked up? Once her child was here these children would mean nothing. Demelza noticed the look and said, "even though I told my children not to make faces at you. I should not have to tell you the same! You are a full-grown woman and supposedly a lady. Although recent actions have shown me you are no better than a common harlot." Ross was so proud of his wife that he bent toward her and kiss her cheek, then Clowance yelled, "harlot." Dwight snickered when he notice Elizabeth's glare he said, "I can go with you to your mother's now." Ross looked at Dwight "yes please, the sooner the better." Elizabeth went to leave and said to Demelza, "You and your children are no better than gutter trash." Demelza was going after her when Ross grabbed her. Elizabeth saw this out of the corner of her eye so she hurriedly got on her horse and left.

Demelza said, "that woman makes my blood boil. Clowance being a little Demelza put her hands on Ross's face and looked him in the eye she told her father, "makes blood oil." Ross kissed his daughter then his wife and said, "there are only three people whom I care to have near me. My wife, my son, and my daughter." Demelza said, "your children do not have any love for the woman and neither do I." Ross told her that he didn't either.

They looked over the treasures the children pick up from the beach mostly shells and sea glass. He notice one item that looked like a gem. He asked the children if he may have it. Both children said yes although he had to bribe Jeremy. Jeremy asked if it was a surprise for momma. Ross ruffled his her and said, "maybe." Jeremy said, "she needs a pretty necklace." Ross thought for a moment and nodded at his son, yes, she does, you will come with me to Truro to choose. Clowance was feeling left out and said, "me too." Ross said, "that we will have to see little one."

The four Poldark's walked home. Ross carried the driftwood tucked under his one arm. He held Jeremy's hand who had ahold of Clowance, her other hand was in Demelza. The child started singing, 'Kos Yn Ta'.

The rest of the song the children made up the words Demelza and Ross laugh when, in one verse - Garrick races to the sea or the Momma calls to me, the best was that Jud is so smelly. When they reached Nampara Ross said, "I think I should sing this song to Jud. Jeremy yelled, "no Pappa he threatened to beat me if I ever sang it again." Ross bent down and said, "I would never allow that." Jeremy said, "I think I hurt his feelings don't sing that please Pappa." Ross nodded and kissed his forehead while he smiled at Demelza. They were both thinking about the wonderful thoughtful son they had.

When Ross and Demelza were in bed later that evening she wanted to ask Ross if Elizabeth was with child, she sure looked like it but she didn't want to know the answer. From her girth, it looked like she would be at least four to five months forward, which would put the child right when she was with Ross. Ross lay thinking about Elizabeth coming to the mine surely now the news would spread like wildfire especially her comment about all his children. There was no denying she was pregnant; thank God she was with George when she was also with him. Then the thought struck him, but that is what she told him, she had proven in the past she could not be trusted. No, certainly she had to have been for George to marry her. He looked at his wife who had a sad pensive look about her, he rolled over to kiss her and she smiled and turned her head away. She said, "I am sorry Ross I am very tired." She rolled away from him. He turned his whole body to spoon her putting his arm around her and saying. "I love you and only you Demelza." Demelza didn't say anything.

Two people other people were thinking of the encounter today one was Elizabeth the other was Dwight. Elizabeth hoped that Demelza realized the babe she was carrying could be Ross's and unless Ross told her about George, she knew Demelza would assume it Ross's. She gleefully clapped her hands she may still get the prize. Dwight was cursing Ross Poldark's name. Has he not done enough hurt to Demelza, she suffered so much, poverty, accusations, and brutality only to have the one person who should always have her best interest cheat on her. Why couldn't he have found her first, he was sure they would have made a very suitable pair, but it didn't happen that way and he knew she loved Ross with her whole being all he could do is be there for her if she needed him. DAMN ROSS POLDARK he said.
