Ross went every morning and evening to see his children and wife. Although Demelza did her best to be busy during those times. She would act like something was of dire importance and needed her attention. Ross knew she attempted to evade him but it didn't discourage him from trying. He knew if it bothered her that much to be around him, she still loved him.

Dwight noticed the children were getting harder to control sweet Jeremy was sulking more and would act out telling his mother no when asked to do the simplest request. Julia picking up on this also started fighting her mother at every turn. Demelza was beside herself. They were the same sweet children when Ross was there. She wondered if she was doing the right thing.

Demelza decided to take the children to Nampara one day while she thought Ross was at the mine. She heard voices coming from the parlor thinking it must be Purdie and Jud she and the children went in. The first thing she noticed was how dusty everything was. The parlor was quiet now, she thought she must have imagined the voices but when she turned the corner there stood Ross and on the settle was Elizabeth. Demelza turned on her heels and left dragging the children along behind her. She heard Ross curse and then come after her. Elizabeth followed along behind.

Jeremy pulled free of Demelza's hand and went running at his dad saying, "I hate you; I hate you; I hate you. Ross hugged him tightly to him all the while he struggled against his father. He calmed down enough to yell, "what is Lizard doing here?" Elizabeth hearing this gasped and broke into tears. Demelza pick up Julia who was crying, she started screaming, "I hate Lizard." Elizabeth spoke up through her tears, which Demelza had no doubt were false. "Ross, are you going to let those children speak to the mother of your child like that?" Ross was staring at Elizabeth when Demelza saw this, she assumed they were starting their affair again. She went to Ross and grabbed Jeremy by the hand and told Ross, "go back to your whore she needs you." She walked away. Ross said, "Demelza it is not what you think." She didn't say anything or let him explain anything she walked as fast as she could go with Jeremy running to keep up.

When they got to the gatehouse Dwight said, "what happened." Jeremy sobbed, "Pappa and Elizabeth." There was a knock at the door and Demelza said, "it is Ross, I don't want to see or speak to him. Jeremy said, "me neither" Julia chimed in "no talk to Pappa, he Lizard." They went to the back of the house where they were staying.

Dwight answered the door, "you just could not stay away from her, could you? Haven't you hurt your wife and children enough." Ross said, "she misunderstood, Elizabeth came there to ask for a place to stay because George believes the child is not his. She has nowhere so she asked if I could give her a place." Dwight said, "where at Nampara now that she knows Demelza is not there? God, you are a fool." Ross said, "where is my wife I need to speak to her?" Dwight turned and said, "she does not want to talk to you!" Ross said, "there is a possibility Elizabeth is carrying my child I just can't abandon her, can I?" Dwight turned back to face him. "No Ross you cannot abandon Elizabeth but you can abandon your wife and children." Ross said, "I am not abandoning them I am just going to help Elizabeth." Dwight said, "after all that has happened between you, Demelza, and Elizabeth, you still don't understand. You are killing your wife by doing this. You are tearing her heart apart. Your children are acting out they sense this unease in their mother. Maybe it is what you want for her to leave her children so that witch can raise them. You have to know she would treat them as if they were slaves." Ross said, "how many times do I have to tell people I don't want Elizabeth." Dwight said, "are you sure because someone that wants to save his marriage would do everything in his power to avoid the cause of the alienation."

Ross could not respond; he knew Dwight was right. Dwight said, "you know giving her a place to stay here will only cause more issues, with your wife and children and not just that but when they are older how do you intend to keep Jeremy, Julia, and this new child from being caught up with the issues you have caused. They will be ridiculed, mocked, and hate each other. You have told me time and again how your father had caused your reputation to be damaged. It seems to me; you are willing to do that to them. Ross shook his head, "but how can I in good conscience turn my back on my child." Dwight said, "leave Ross I can not look at you anymore. What that statement indicates to me is that you care more about this child than you do the others?" Demelza had heard most of the conversation, and when she heard the last part, she walk farther away and started packing their things. She would not stay here and let Ross make a mockery of their life together or their children. She would go to Scotland or Ireland, she needed to start a new life. Away from Ross.
