Matteo

Seven years later:

I was laying in bed when my phone began to vigorously vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out before reading my sons name.

I answered it, happy to talk to him.

"Hey, Noa-" I was barely able to get out before he began to speak.

"Dad! You wouldn't believe what I just got in the mail!" He yelled.

"What." I deadpanned. Wondering what could be so important.

"Call me on FaceTime." I removed my phone from my ear with a sigh before seeing him on his kitchen table.

"What's got him so riled up, Selena?" I asked the pregnant woman who sat beside him.

She sighed with a firm hand on her stomach.

"Listen! Baby go up to bed I'll be up in a minute." She held her back as I watched her step out of frame.

"Look! It says 'To: Matteo and Noah, from, Ayla!'" He whisper yelled.

My mouth fell agape.

Ever since Ayla said goodbye to Noah and I, I only ever saw her at Noah's graduation. Noah told me she had moved in with Summer and took a gap year before she was accepted into Duke.

I had always wondered what happened to her, what she made out of herself, what she did.

"Open it." I deadpanned.

His hand shook as he teared the envelope open and removed what seemed to be a decorated invitation.

He eld the paper in front of the screen as I read it.

Ayla and Atlas

Please rsvp using the number below

I didn't want to read the rest before Noah pulled another piece of paper from the card.

"There's a note."

I remained quiet.

"It reads 'dear, Noah and Matteo. You're probably wondering why you've received this, and if I were you I would've had the same reaction. Please don't be alarmed. I'm getting married in a few weeks and I'd love for both of you to come. Both of you had been such important pieces of my life and fueled who I am today, and I'd just love for you two to bring a plus one, I'd be delighted to meet who ever was lucky enough to complete you two. Please consider. Love, Ayla."

"She remembered us." I whispered.

Something in me ignited.

I was glad she moved on.

I was glad she found someone.

"Rsvp." I told him.

-

I leaned down, air kissing Selena on the cheeks as Noah and her climbed into the back seat of my car.
