“ICARUS IS THESEUS: A DEEP DIVE INTO THE HERO-TURNED-VIGILANTE-”

“In a shocking twist of events, retired Number One Hero The Captain has returned to take her old position once again, raising the question that is on everyone’s minds: what will happen to hero society now?”

………………………………..

“Hey, give it back bitch!”

“Maybe if you got taller you could reach up and grab it yourself-”

“Shut the fuck up, you’re fucking BALD-”

“Boys, boys,” Niki sighed, walking out from the backroom of the cafe, her arms full of a new batch of baked goods for the front counter, “can you take your fight somewhere that isn’t disturbing to the customers?”

Tommy glared at Wilbur, who only smiled genially back, holding Tommy’s name tag over his head and just out of Tommy’s reach. Niki let out another sigh before flicking her wrist. A stream of water came whipping out of the faucet in the corner, splashing Wilbur square in the face. Wilbur squaked and stumbled back, dropping the name tag for Tommy to grab out of the air. He wiped water out of his eyes, sending Niki a betrayed look.

“My own friend-”

“Don’t flatter yourself, bossman,” Tubbo piped up from his normal spot in the corner, cup of hot chocolate in hand and some weird gadget layed out in pieces on the table in front of him in front of him. “You know Niki likes us more than you.”

Wilbur looked aghast, turning to look for support from Techno, but Techno just ignored him, glancing over the menu one more time before putting in his order.

“I’ll take a-”

“Black coffee, ya. You’re still basic and boring,” Tommy finished for him, earning the smallest of smiles from the pink haired man. Wilbur sighed dramatically, letting his forehead fall against the counter with a soft thump.

“I think Wilbur’s dead body is gonna scare off customers,”Ranboo said conversationally from his spot near the coffee machine, his lips twitching up into a grin as he met Tommy’s eyes.

“We can’t have that,” Niki agreed, reaching around Tommy and gently shoving Wilbur’s head off the counter.

Wilbur straigtened with a huff, causing Techno to snort. “Why do you all insist on bullying me ? What have ever done to you?”

“You tried to throw me off a building once,” Tubbo called over helpfully, only recieving a stuck out tongue from Wilbur.

“You deserved it.”

The bell over the cafe door chimed, pulling Tommy’s attention away from his bickering friends to the newcomers. There were three men walking through the door, all talking animatedly with eachother. Sapnap looked up, waving as he caught Tommy watching them.

“Hey Toms! How have you been? Do you like the new place?”

Tommy smiled, noting the rings that now hung proudly around his neck, shining in the lights of the cafe. Sapnap’s hair was pulled out of his face into a loose ponytail, and it looked like someone had done his eyeliner. Tommy knew for a fact that Sapnap didn’t have the skills to do that, so Tommy guessed it was one of the other two.

“I’ve been pretty good, I suppose. The new apartment is a little boring, but I think Tubbo will change that sometime soon.”

The shorter brunet, who Tommy had found out to be named Karl, stepped forwards, grinning widely as he looked the menu over. The other man, also shorter than Sapnap, stepped closer as well, his two colored eyes squinting at the menu in front of him. The scar that cut through his milky white eye was very familiar to Tommy, but he couldn’t quite figure out why.

“Q, what do you want?” Karl asked suddenly, turning to watch the scarred man - Q? - as he continued to squint at the menu.

“Uh. Coffee?”

Wilbur snorted, causing the man to glare at him.

“Fuck off, Soot, I’m new to this whole thing. I always have Sap get my coffee for me.”

Sapnap laughed softly, dropping an arm around the man’s shoulder. “Quackity, I hate to break it to you, but I could probably give you straight black coffee and you wouldn’t even notice.”

“Black coffee is good!” Wilbur cried, causing Karl to roll his eyes.

“Black coffee is the spawn of the devil.”

Eventually, Karl gave their order, a smile on his face the whole time. When Tommy asked for a name for the order, Quackity gave a sly grin.

“Jester.”

Tommy stared at him. Blinked. Then sighed, quickly scribbling the name on the cups and handing them off the Ranboo, who started prepping them easily. Things really did just have to come full circle, didn’t they?

“Hey Toms,” Wilbur said suddenly, pulling Tommy’s attention away from the cups he was neatly sorting. “What time is your lunch break?”

“Twelve, why?”

Wilbur smiled, crossing his arms. “Wanna go get hotdogs with me? For old time’s sake?”

For old times sake. Had it only been a few weeks before when Tommy had gone to get lunch for the first time with Will? So much had happened in the past few months, Tommy had grown as a person in so many ways, but he was still the same kid as he always had been.

He was still just Tommy, the barista. Sometimes, he would be Theseus, the vigilante. And maybe one day, he could be able to once again be Icarus, the hero.

But for now, he fine with just being Tommy, the loud barista who was living with his two best friends, serving drinks to villains and vigilantes and heroes alike. He could live with just being Tommy, Wilbur’s younger brother and a borderline menace to society.

He was ok with just being Tommy.

“Of course big man, but you’re paying!”

Just Tommy was enough for him.
