Chapter 18
Ryan POV
I usually don't miss out on the details. Especially if it's about a case, but this feeling of helplessness and running around has brought back a cloud of uncertainty that I have pushed back long ago. Maybe the monsters of the past have opened a door into the present.
The moment we found out about the possible return of Jakes' dad from overseas we have been stuck at this typical, congested police station. In "safe" hands, pffft, more like stuck in a room without coffee with a grumpy Lea and a unusually quiet Megan.
We haven't said anything since we got forced to stay here , in this room. In the corner. At the basement. Of a 10 storey, high security building it's not like we're mad at one another, it's just the mundane colours , crappy food, the smell of sweat and stick and faulty lighting really set an atmosphere for a bad and grumpy tone to all of us. My dad could have us shifted to any other level in the building, but no. He wanted us in the document room, together with all the evidence, right at the basement. But no, it apparently is not safe. I guess I have to trust him on this one. It's his place after all.
A buzz through the speakers in the room broke our silences and an announcement was made, requesting us to come up to the 36th floor a.k.a my dads' office.
He was on the phone and signalled for three of us to take a seat on the couch adjacent to his desk.
" I need some sleep" groaned lea rubbing her eyes while Megan just took a seat. She has been quiet and all fidgety ever since we've been here."Right the three of you listen. We're short on manpower and there are plenty of things going to go down today. One wrong move can cost us. Majority of our officers will be on the front line today so the three of you will be under my watch and go where I go. I don't want you causing already more trouble than what yall did."
Why not just stay here? Who's going to harm us here?
" the letter that you brought..."He mentioned pointing at me " turns out to be some damned thing after all. Mr Barnes is coming and is also really happy at you lot for blessing his one and only son. And, we've got a anonymous tip leading us to believe on a possible location of Jake Barnes, so we'll be heading there right now. Above all this shit I've got a big shot coming into town that I need to keep a lookout for in case some shit happens. " He finished by nodding his head and draining the last of his coffee and left the room.
Leaving the three of us speechless and also a little dazed from the amount of information we've just had thrown at us.
"well what the hell are you waiting for? Hurry the hell up" he voiced out from the hallway. I rolled my eyes and headed out behind the girls.
Throughout the ride I was lost in thought about two main things.
The familiarity of the situation we are in now brings back many memories, but I just cannot recall them and not knowing what they are and how I managed to forget in the first place is frustrating. I can feel the frustration growing in my head like a tumour of some sorts.
The other thing that has been on my mind for quite some time has been Megan. I'd be lying to myself if I said I didn't care. Why do I even care? I have no idea, but there's something about her that draws me to her. I like her. How she is. Hell I even like myself at times when I'm with her. Things have not been going so smoothly as things have escalated quickly with news about Jake and all, but whatever happens. I want her to come out of this unscathed, but I have a very bad gut feeling about how this is going to pan out. Don't we all know what they say about gut feelings : they are usually right.
