Chapter 5: Promotion

*About a week and a half later

You were working on preparations for Papa III's Halloween celebration and while you were happy he got Sister Imperator's approval you couldn't help but think about his teasing from the other week. You felt like your crush was childish, like your reasoning wasn't valid and yet you also couldn't help it. You weren't lying to Papa III when you said you found Copia attractive, he wasn't as conventionally attractive as Papa but that seemed to draw you to him. If anything, he was a considerate and passionate person and when you saw him get excited you couldn't help but find it attractive. You tried to shake the thoughts from your mind and continue on your stack of papers, though it wasn't taking long since you'd already gone over most of this with Papa. You turned in the stack as the doors to the library opened, everyone looked up to see a ghoul walk in. At first you thought it was Rain, but you soon realized that this ghoul was a little shorter and seemed to have a little more of an attitude. One of the other girls, you believed her name was Samantha, seemed to recognize him and greeted him.

"Oh, Sodo, what brings you here?"

"I'm here to grab sister Y/n?"

You waved at the ghoul and he nodded to you

"Let's go, Sister Imperator wants to see you."

You said goodbye to the rest of the group as you left with Sodo.

"It's nice to meet you, Sodo right?"

"Yeah, I'm the fire ghoul."

"Ah, I'll admit I thought you were Rain at first glance so forgive me."

He chuckled at this which made you feel better.

"Yeah, while it used to piss me off, Rain and I are probably the ones that look the most alike. It's a similar story with Swiss and Mountain sometimes, though Mountain is the tallest and usually doesn't wear shoes."

"So, Mountain is the drummer, right?"

"Yep."

"Ok. Jeez, it's gonna take me forever to remember who's who with you guys. I need a cheat sheet."

"You're the newbie, right? Honestly, don't sweat it too much."

"I'll also have to admit, you're nicer than some of the others make you out to be."

"Oh, I'm a certified asshole, but that's mostly during rituals and with the other ghouls. You also haven't done anything to piss me off yet."

"Well, good to know."

You both stopped in front of the door to Imperator's office, you were surprised to see the door open and Cardinal sitting in the office along with Sister Imperator. Sodo knocked and both looked towards you both.

"Ah, thank you Sodo, you may go now."

Sodo nodded to Sister and patted your shoulder before walking away down the hall. You took a step into the office.

"Greetings Sister, you too Cardinal."

Sister Imperator nodded and gestured to the other chair in front of her desk. You took a seat, the Cardinal giving you a small smile which you reciprocated.

"Sister Y/n, do you know why I've called you here today?"

You looked at Imperator and shook your head

"No, I must admit I don't. I hope I haven't done anything wrong."

"Oh, quite the contrary, you have been recommended for a promotion of sorts."

You were surprised by that, you looked at Copia in hopes he had an idea what was going on. He gave a reassuring smile and gestured back towards Imperator.

"You see, Y/n, with Papa III's rising popularity and our clergy growing we in the higher clergy have had an increase in work as a result. Cardinal Copia had put in a request for a personal assistant and recommended you for the job. I was a bit hesitant at first as you are still a bit new, but I was convinced after Papa III showed me your work on his budgeting proposal. I normally don't offer this kind of job to new members but you have shown to have the skills to meet the job. So, will you accept this job?"

"May I ask what the job entails before I agree to anything?"

"Always so thorough, another great quality. Honestly, it shouldn't be too much more challenging than your current work. You'll just be around Cardinal most of the time and help him with his paperwork or anything else he asks for help with."

"Alright, then I accept the job."

"Excellent, Copia will show you to his office and you will move to one of the rooms closer to his office, just so you aren't running around the church all the time. Cardinal, she's all yours."

Both you and Copia stand and give a small bow to Sister Imperator.

"Thank you Sister, and good afternoon."

"Yes, thank you Sister Imperator."

"Good day Cardinal, sister Y/n."

You follow Cardinal out and down the hallway towards what you assumed was his office.

"So, you recommended me?"

You saw the Cardinal become a bit flustered, though you were nicer than Papa III so you didn't say anything.

"W-well I kept my word, you proved to have the skills so I gave a recommendation. Apparently Terzo did as well."

"Terzo?"

"Oh, Papa III. You know them as Papa I, Papa II and Papa III but they also have the nicknames Primo, Secondo and Terzo."

"Oh, I know, I've just never really heard anyone call the Papas by those nicknames."

"Oh, yes, we clergy members use them more than you all. I-I heard you had helped Terzo with his budget?"

"Yes, he's terrible at it and asked for help. He's a pretty boy but I don't really see what the other sisters see in him. I honestly see him as a fuck boy."

Cardinal started laughing, trying to keep it down but failing miserably. This caused you to to start laughing as well.

"I'm sorry, I really shouldn't be talking about him like that."

Copia put a hand on your shoulder, still chuckling but able to talk.

"To be honest, I think it'll do him good to have at least one person call him out other than us clergy members."

"I have to ask Cardinal, why do you care what happened between me and Terzo?"

"W-well, in your words, he's a bit of a fuck boy. I just want to make sure he treated you well."

You gave him a questioning look, causing the Cardinal to look away and fail to hide a blush on his face. You take his hand, though he's wearing leather gloves, and give him a small kiss on his hand. He looks at you surprised.

"My dear Cardinal, you don't have to worry about anything. Now, I believe you are supposed to be showing me to your office."

Copia clears his throat and offers his arm to you, you take it and continue down the hall.
