You didn't expect to find yourself in a time freezing and unfreezing match with Will but there you were, trying to freeze time to get more information while he adamantly fought against it and made time resume.
"Will! Stop!" You're aggravated by his sudden urge to fight you peering into his brain "No you stop, Y/N! You're wrong! You got it wrong!" He yells similar to a toddler throwing a tantrum.
"No I don't!" You yell back just the same "We can do this all night if we have to.." you tilt your head in threat as Will throws up his hands "Fine. I'll find a way out myself then." He snarls
Your eyes widen at the stupidity "You can't just leave!" You call out after him as he walks into the darkness of the dense forest "I've survived here once before." He yells back with a sniffle.
You can't leave the group — you can't let Will wander off. What the hell are you to do?!
Time resumes as the group once again continues walking and talking as if nothing happened.
You stay in place, looking out into the vast nothingness in front of you. You can't see Will, hear him or his thoughts.
Great. Fan-fucking-tastic.
"Where's Will?" Eddie looks around in confusion, cluing in to something weird happening.
The group stops ahead of you to look around "It's a long story," you sigh "But I have a feeling that once we get to Vecna, Will will be there too."
"How.. it's been like two seconds. How did a long story happen in two seconds?" Steve asks completely dumbfounded
"Try ten minutes." You correct as everyone's head whips around to look at you "Yeah, like I said. Long story, I'll explain on the way."
The group was no less confused than you about Wills history and mysterious background. It was a shock, no doubt.
How did Joyce not put two and two together? Why did she never tell Will? How did Jonathan not know? Why wasn't Will ever experimented on? So many questions with very little answers.
You could peer into Wills mind all you wanted but you can't access information that he just doesn't have, you're not even sure if he knows he has the information that he does.. he may have blocked it out or was made to block it out.
"So what? We kill him - no. No way." Steve shakes his head furiously "You think I want to kill him?" You scoff, that was one of the most sickening thoughts you ever had to stumble on.
"If he is Vecnas true vessel, the mind flayer wasn't going to take over Will. The mind flayer was guarding him, keeping him away from us until Vecna could take over.. now that he's gone, Vecna has free range." You explain slowly
Dustin points to the sword "Can't you just use that to locate him?" He asks with knitted brows "I can't.. sense him.. hear him. It's like he's totally off the map." You sigh loudly,
"If we defeat Vecna.. shouldn't that put an end to it? He can't rule the upside down if Vecna ceases to exist,". Robin points out in thought "Honestly, I don't know." You breathe out.
"The only reason I even know this much is because... well, paying attention to when Eddie plays D&D." You point out in fact as Eddie looks down at you in question "So we all.. have the answers with out really knowing it." He says slowly as you give a faint nod.
"It's piecing those answers together.. that's the hard part." You pause for a brief moment "This sword only gives so much knowledge, the rest is up to us.." you let out a tired exhale.
Your brain was starting to hurt from how much energy it was expending, how you wish you could go back to the days before you ever knew the upside down existed.
It was so simple then. So trivial.
"I hate to be the one to ask but.. how much longer?" Robins voice is hoarse, sounding like she needs some water. "A few minutes, give or take." You continue walking hand in hand with Eddie "I swear my legs are going to fall off," Dustin groans.
"And we're here," you announce to the group as you reach the forests edge on the opposite side of where the mind flayer had been "Well here ish," you whisper.
Before you was much like other areas of the upside down, nothingness. Void of all life, creatures, things.
But it was different too, this was still the upside down yes but it was access to Vecnas mind - the monster behind the curtain, where his weaknesses lie.
It almost looked like you were all on another planet, the red glow over the upside down touching every inch of this land of nothingness.
decayed pieces of brick and stone hung in the air - quite literally just floating. There were a multitude of stones in strange shapes and forms, bodies that Vecna has been collecting for who knows how long..
You turn to the group with a bitter sweet smile upon your lips "You guys are going to hate me for this but you.. especially you," you say in reference to Eddie as your hand rests on his cheek.
"What? Why?" Dustin lets out a childlike, confused laugh "What are you going to do?" Steve asks in fear as you bow your head while a slow breath escapes your lips. "Protecting you, all of you." You say firmly as you bring your head back up to Eddie.
"I can't lose you again, not in this world or the other." You whisper to him, it's a cry mixed with an apology "Y/N, whatever you're thinking, no." Eddie shakes his head, his long brown hair flowing with.
"I'm sorry," you whisper again, striking the ground below with the sword as a blue glowing gate opens up, unlike the ones to the upside down which are fiery, veiny.. gross. This one is soft blue, welcoming.. a good home send.
"Y/N No!" Eddie yells, "No, no you can't just —," Steve goes to argue "It's safer this way." You say quietly as one by one, they tumble back into the Hawkins they've come to know so well with out even having a chance to blink or process what was going on.
Each with a face of shock, horror.. betrayal. The gate closing with out issue seconds after the group lands back into your own world, this time.. truly with no way back.
They were going to be pissed but they were going to be safe and that mattered more than anything. You knew if you had opened a gate before reaching Vecna, the group would fight harder or worse — you'd alert the mind flayer or Vecna himself.
You had to wait until the last possible second to make sure they were all back to safety, that there was no chance of their return.
That could very well be the last gate to ever open and close, you knew all along that you could be walking straight into your death but telling the group that? Telling Eddie that? Not a chance.
This was a risk worth taking if it meant putting an end to the upside down once and for all and keeping everyone out of harms way.
Though Will... you weren't so sure what his fate would be, similarly that you weren't sure what yours would be.
This could be the end as you know it.
