Benjamin clasped Ally's face with his hands and then his lips touched hers. He pressed his mouth to hers with such force that she would've stumbled back if her hand hadn't found his arm.

And then it was over. He stepped back and casually stuffed his hands into his pockets.

"I thought that might calm you down."

She frowned. "W-what... Why did you do that?"

"You were causing a commotion. I kept us from getting found. You're welcome."

"I'm welcome?"

He observed her confused face. She didn't know what else to say. How to react.

"Don't think anything of it." His eyes had a taunting glare to them, but his voice was soft. "It was nothing. I needed you to keep quiet, and you did."

It was her turn to step back, putting more distance between them. "I'm sure that wasn't the best way to do that", she said coolly.

Her stomach made a little jump when the kiss replayed in her mind.

That can't have been the best way.

Was it a wish or something she truly believed?

"I'm sorry", he said but he didn't convey the feeling even the slightest.

"What an apology", she answered, her voice practically dripping with sarcasm.

She paused before uttering the words that she had never meant more.

"I will never forgive you for taking me here."

The words hurt more than Benjamin would ever have imagined that words could. He locked eyes with Ally. "I would do it all over again."

This time it was her eyes that caught a sparkle of pain.

"Let me explain", he continued.

She stayed quiet but it didn't exactly calm him down. Her silence was far scarier than her rage. He would take her screaming over her lack of words, any day of the week.

"Adryan presented the idea to me yesterday and I still think it was a good one. Cruel, but clever." He watched her carefully as he spoke but her face gave him nothing. He had no way of knowing what she was thinking. "By showing you off, he showed the world that you're strong and that you're under his protection. The more put together you seem, the more powerful he seems."

He paused, once again looking for a non-existing reaction. "You're a part of his kingdom and with his queen intact, the kingdom is as strong as ever", he continued. "No one has any reason to believe that any cracks have been found in the castle's protective wall."

He fell silent. Her eyes hadn't moved from his face. They watched each other for what felt like an eternity, before she opened her mouth:

"I'm done. I'm done with you. Both of you", she added. "I don't want to do this anymore, to pretend that everything's fine. I want to go back to my old life and I don't want to look back." Her eyes glittered but not from tears, he realised - from relief.

"I wish you well", Ally said softly

She meant every word. She wished Benjamin the best things in life and hoped that he one day would find his own way out of the dark world that he so stubbornly thought that he belonged to. Not in. To. She had a feeling that he had joined because he was lost and alone and somehow now believed that he owed his life to Adryan. Adryan had saved him from dangerous thoughts and since then he had been prepared to sacrifice everything to pay him back.
