Chapter Twenty-Two"Standard Chinese is based on Beijing dialect, the dialect of Mandarin as spoken in Beijing," Luwi says giving us a brief history about where she originates from.
My friends and I, as well as Cameron all hang out under a tree studying about one another and where we come from. It's not just the science, the math and the English that matters but learning about people's history Is life changing.
Today, we schooling hormonal teens aren't learning as we do everyday because they give us time to have leisure activities.
Seniors remember?
"Whatever it may be just have fun" the principal said as she walked into our classroom to announce our day of relaxation.
"But don't bang each other in the bathrooms or any premises of the school, please! I don't want y'all getting STD's," she said making sure we're clear.
And most of us were but we could hear other rebellious and naughty teens fucking around in the locker rooms.
"So you mean the standard Chinese also called the Madarin is the official standard language of China?" Georgie asks.
"Yes. De facto official language of Taiwan, and one of the four official languages of Singapore. Where It's called Huayu or simply Chinese," Luwi responds.
"Its amazing how you guys know so much about where you come from. I'm intrigued," Cameron says feeling honoured to have him in our circle.
Well,of course because my friends know I like him so bad.
"Aw,we learn from our parents and grand parents. They always say it's important to know who we are and where we come from. At least just know something about our history," Luwi tells Cameron.
"Don't you know even a little bit about your origin,Cameron?" Karan asks.
"I don't really talk about it that much," he tells us.
"Come on. You know at least something, don't you?" Luwi asks Cameron.
"Why don't you just talk about it,Cameron?" Georgie asks.
"Uh,It's because I never really have anybody to talk to it about except from my Nana," he says.
I see Cameron is shying away so I say something.
"Zambia is a landlocked and linked country in south-central Africa. It is boardered by Angola, Botswana, Democratic republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania. My country is best known for its richness in natural resources and is vast in waterbodies and wildlife." I speak up.
"Wow. Now there you go,say something Cameron," Georgie says astonished and insisting Cameron says something.
"Your turn," I say to Cameron and he chuckles.
"Well, I know that the music of Cuba, includinmg its instruments, performance and dance, comprises a large set of traditions influenced mostly by west Africa and European music especially Spanish," Cameron says.
"I adore Camilla Cabello. Don't go yet papi!" Luwi says and we all laugh.
"What else do you know?" I ask.
"Due to the synthetic nature of most of its genres,Cuban music is often considered as one of the richest and most influential regional in the world."
"Oh,we love it too." Luwi says and we all agree.
"What about you Kabwe? Music wise," Cameron asks me.
"Well, music wise we have a legendary genre created in the late 60's through the early 70's called Zamrock. It's something most Zambian artists are trying to revamp again. I credit Sampa The Great for bringing us out here and making a name for our nation," I say.
"The genre consists of African music and psychedelic rock,as well as funk music. A credible inspirational artist of this genre Is James Brown," I speak up again and my friends are intrigued.
"In India,we have so many gods. Always busy," Karan says and we chuckle.
"I don't really know what to say. Uh,well, the Queen of England died,so... It's a small world after all," Georgie says and we all nod in affirmation.
"She colonized a thousand of countries in Africa and around the world. Ancestors didn't just drown on their way to Europe and the Western countries mysteriously," I say and my friends keep quiet.
It gets awkward.
"Okay, forget what I said. Uh,Karan talk about Samsara," I say trying to avoid any further awkwardness from occurring.
"Haha,uh,Its a Sanskrit or Pali word that means 'world'. It is also the concept of rebirth and cyclicality of all life, matter, existence, a fundamental belief of all indian religion."
Karan knows a lot.
"So you mean it's the cycle of death and rebirth?" Cameron asks.
"Yes. Popularly known that way. It is sometimes referred to with terms or phrases such as transmigration, Karmic cycle, reincarnation or punarjanman," he responds with a smile.
"Well,The earliest known written words of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC from the Shang dynasty. During the reign of king Wu Ding, referred to in the records as the twenty-first king of Shang." Luwi contributes.
"Glad we all have an idea of where the fuck we come from," I say and we all agree to this.
Glad I have friends like this.
A circle kissed by diversity and intelligence But I'm glad I have Cameron around. He's always by my side from the day that I met him.
*
We are all laying on the grass staring at the blue sky. Clouds cover up the Sun but it's bright and beautiful. The breeze just right and everyone on the school grounds seems to be having fun with whatever it is we have ourselves occupied with.
I'm laying next to Cameron who is staring at the sky with me. We stare in silence and I love that he's next to me. Suddenly,he looks at me. I can feel him stare but I don't look back.
"Why are you looking at me?" I ask him and finally turn to look at him.
He has his eyes on me. His eyes speak louder than words do and we just lock eyes with each other. I then lie In my side to take a clear view at the boy I like and he smiles at me.
"I wanna be by your side for as long as I want. Wouldn't you like that?" Cameron asks and I lightly smile at him.
"Nothing lasts forever,Cameron. That's what I'm worried about," I tell him and he moves closer to me and starts to play with my hair still looking me in the eyes.
"Even if it doesn't last forever,we'll still have fun while we can," Cameron tells me.
I don't reply and he lies back on his back staring at the sky again. I lie back on my back too and hold Cameron by the hand as we look at the beautiful sky above us. Cameron holds my hand tighter assuring me that we'll be alright.
We will.
