BIRTHDAYS ARE a scam

BIRTHDAYS ARE a scam. Nothing pleasing about getting old and soon having the same amount of wrinkles as your grandpa.

But there wasn't much you could do about it. Turning sixteen was supposed to be fun and freeing, but instead Adelaide found herself sitting on the roof of the abandoned building watching the sunset.

She did this every year on her birthday and she couldn't see herself changing that routine anytime soon.

Expect she had tweaked it since she thirteen. She use to sit on the roof with Rodrick but with everything that happened in the past couple of weeks... she decided that it would be best to sit alone on the roof and just watch the sunset.

"Are you bored yet?"

Adelaide didn't bother turning around. She kept her knee tucked close to her chest.

Of course he would show. She had stopped him from coming, but she was really hoping that he'd stay away just for the day.

Rodrick joined her side and the two of them sat in silence.

Adelaide hadn't forgiven Rodrick for what he'd done. She wasn't ready to forgive him and he understood that, but he wasn't going to miss watching the sunset with her on her birthday.

She turned her head towards him. He'd been watching the sunset just as she was.

"We're not friends anymore." She said, "At least, for now we aren't."

Rodrick sighed and turned facing her. She was serious nothing about any of this was a joke. He actually had to put in effort to regain his friendship back with her and forget the relationship aspect. That was never going to happen.

"I get it."

She nodded and continued to watch as the sun began setting over the town.

Adelaide didn't think she was being harsh and truthfully she could've done so much worse than just end her friendship with Rodrick.

She almost felt like crying in that moment. Not only to make him feel bad but because she actually just ended a friendship that meant everything to her.

All over a dare.

But they were kids. She was turning sixteen. She wasn't an adult and even then not every adult had things figured out. So, Adelaide sat on that roof with Rodrick.

Two people who had feelings for each. Two people who were best friends. Two people who were kids who didn't know any better than to let others ruin what they once had.

Rodrick Heffley and Adelaide Monroe were now strangers. Two people who didn't know each other at all.

Two people who didn't know each other at all
