The doctor comes back in and we tell him that we have decided to go through with the procedure. He schedules me for tomorrow afternoon and thanks us for coming in to see him. We leave the hospital and stop to get something to eat. After we eat, we head home so Elena can take her nap. When we get home, I put Elena down in her crib so she can sleep. I walk outside to the back porch and take a second to clear my head. Tanner walks outside and finds me sitting on the deck. He sits besides me and wraps his arms around me. "How are you processing all of this?" I look up at him and start crying. "I have so many different emotions in my head right now, I don't know what to think. I'm over the moon that I'm pregnant but also hearing the news that I have cancer.. it hurts me to know." He cuddles me back up into his arms. "You'll be fine honey, I'm here. We'll get through this just like we've gotten through everything together." He makes me always feel safe and protected from everything. I start to feel weak so Tanner and I lay down for a nap.
As I lay down, I start to dream. I'm in the hospital giving birth. I'm laying on the hospital bed pushing out my baby. My child comes into this world and the doctor announces that it is a healthy boy. Tanner is beside me, smiling. They take my son to get cleaned and wrapped up so Tanner and I can hold him. As they hand me my son, my life feels complete and full. I have two perfect, healthy children and an amazing husband. We love on our son and hold him tightly. We have created the most perfect boy in the whole world. We never thought this would've ever happened to us. I hand our son to Tanner to hold so I can relax. All of a sudden, I can't breathe. It feels like my lungs have completely collapsed and I'm trying to reach for air, but nothing is working. The doctor hears my heart monitor start to slow down and beep. The doctor rushes my husband and our child out of the room so he can stop what is killing me. The doctor puts an oxygen mask on my face and tells me to breathe, but nothing is working. He yells for a nurse to open an OR room and immediately rush me in there. No one can figure out what is going on with me. My parents and Tanner's parents see me get pushed down the hall in a scurrying motion. Everyone starts to panic. Everyone is trying to get answers. The doctor puts me under anesthesia and cuts me open. My heart is failing. It is not getting oxygen. He proceeds to cut open my heart and preform surgery on it. I am in the OR room for about 3 hours and they finally sew me back up and walk towards my family. "I am sorry to say, but she didn't make it. The oxygen wasn't going into her heart properly and she wasn't able to breathe. We did everything we could. I'm so sorry." My husband drops his knees to the ground and yells in pain. My husband cried loudly. His heart is completely shattered. All of a sudden I wake up to my husband on top of me shaking me to wake up. "Allison! Wake up!" I scream at the top of my lungs with a scarce cry. He hugs me and tells me that everything is fine. "Hey, it's okay, I'm here. There is nothing to worry about." I grab him and hold him close. He lays me back down and wraps his arms around me. "Tell me what happened." I try to find the words amongst my sobbing and crying. He tells me to calm down and breathe. I try to calm myself down and collect my words so I can tell him about my nightmare. I tell him every single detail of my nightmare and he starts to cry. We hold each other until we had completely stopped crying. I hear Elena crying in her room. I jump out of bed and run to her. She is standing up in her crib yelling and screaming at the top of her lungs. I guess I woke her and scared her when I screamed. I comfort her and tell her everything is fine. Tanner runs in there afterwards and comforts both of us.
The next morning I prepare myself for my procedure. I cook breakfast and enjoy time with my family before we head back to the hospital. Tanner had packed me an overnight bag the night before so I wouldn't have to worry about anything. We head to the hospital and check in. The nurse brings me into the patient room and tells me to put on the hospital gown and wait for the doctor. We waited for about 10 minutes until he came into the room to talk to us about the procedure. They bring in a hospital bed for me to get in and take me into the OR room. I hug and kiss my husband and daughter. Hopefully I'll be out soon.
Six hours later, they stitch me up. I am brought back into a patient "healing" room. I haven't woken up yet. They tell my husband that the surgery went well and that I should be waking up at any moment. They direct my husband into the room I am in. Tanner walks in and sits beside me in a chair next to the bed and sits Elena in his lap. I wake up and see the both of them half asleep. Tanner wakes up and sees me awake. He lays Elena next to me. She cuddles up next to me while she sleeps. I am still sore from the procedure but I don't care. I want my baby like this. She needs to be in my arms. Tanner leans over and kisses my forehead. "The doctor said the surgery went well and that you should recover very soon. They were successful and removed the bone marrow before it could spread." My eyes start to tear up but I hold them in so I don't wake up Elena. The doctor comes in an hour later to check up on me. He notices Elena sleeping in the bed next to me. What a precious daughter you have, she looks just like you. "She is my everything. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for her." I looked down at Elena sleeping peacefully in my arms. "It's nice to see such loving and caring parents, you don't see that often anymore." The doctor paced his eyes back and forth between me and Tanner. "Anyways, I came to check on you and see how you were doing. Are you feeling better?" I sip my glass of water. "I feel much better, still a little tired but enough to spend a little moment with my family." He looked happy. "Very well, let me know if there is anything I can do." He turns around and walks out of the door, closing it behind him. I lay my head back and turn towards Tanner. He leans closer to me and swipes a hair from my face and kisses me. He picks up Elena slowly so he doesn't wake her and goes to lay on the window bed in the corner beside me. I fall asleep.
A few hours later I wake back up. I feel hungry. Tanner was still asleep and Elena was just starting to wake up. "Tanner.." I whispered. He woke up immediately. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" I reassured him that I was fine, but that I was hungry. He sat up and picked Elena up and laid her next to me. "I'll run out and get some food. What are you in the mood for?" I think very precisely about what I am craving. "I really want a burger." "Alright, I'll be back with your food honey." He opened the door and left the room. I watched Elena as she sat in my arms doing what toddlers do. We looked into each other's eyes and smiled. She grabbed my hair and started playing with it. I waited for Tanner to get back with the food, man was I starving. A few minutes later he came back with Gordon's Burger Shack, one of my favorite burger shacks. I couldn't wait to taste the greasy yummy taste of a delicious burger. We sat up and ate and watched a movie on the small tv in my room.
