We arrive back to a crowd of roughty teenagers. I see a girl by the fire, with her wrist up close to the flame, and the boy who tried to fight wells earlier, who's name I learned is Murphy, using some kind of knife on it. The wristband pops and comes right off her arm, everyone cheers. Murphy tosses it into the fire. "Who's next?" I hear someone say. I relized pretty quickly that the voice belongs to Bellamy.
What the hell are they doing? These people don't fail to lower my expectations. I get being mad at the council, so am I but the communication system is down. The wristbands are our only hope.
I yell out at Bellamy. "What the hell are you doing?"
"We're liberating ourselves, mountain girl what does it look like?" he snarks back.
Mountin girl? So original. Before I can clap back, Wells does. "It looks like you're trying to get us all killed. The communication system is dead. These wristbands are all we got. Take them off, and the Ark will think we're dying, that it's not safe for them to follow."
Bellamy retorts back again. "That's the point, Chancellor. We can take care of ourselves, can't we?" The crowd around me let's out an array of chant-full 'yeahs'
He's ridiculous. I yell out back to him, and the crowd. "You think this is a game? Those aren't just our friends and our parents up there. They're our farmers, our doctors, our engineers. I don't care what he tells you." I gesture to Bellamy. "We won't survive here on our own, there's so much you guys don't understand about the ark and besides, if it really is safe, how could you not want the rest of our people to come down?"
Bellamy starts to slowly walk towards me and wells. "My people already are down. Those people locked my people up. Those people killed my mother for the crime of having a second child." He then looks at Wells and points his finger in his face. "Your father did that."
"My father didn't write the laws."
"No. He enforced them, but not anymore, not here. Here, there are no laws." Bellamy chants.
The crowd parades their chants of yes's and yeah's once again. This is beginning to feel like a cult. A cult of juvenile delinquents. Lovely.
Bellamy continues his rant. "Here, we do whatever the hell we want whenever the hell we want." He looks and me straight in the eyes. "Now, you don't have to like it. You can even try to stop it or change it" Then he looks at Wells. "Even kill me. You know why? Whatever the hell we want."
Sure, pure anarchy. Yet again, it doesn't take a genius to see how that will never work.
That moron Murphy starts to chant. "Whatever the hell we want!" The another kid chants. "What ever the hell we want!" then the entire crowd is chanting.
All of the sudden, our newly discovered cult of dumbfound kids chants are interrupted with the loud crack of rumbling thunder. Then it starts to rain. "Rain!" Some kid yells. "Check it out!" "Its water!"
I'm so stunned. I used to memorize the water cycle for fun when I was little. Okay that sounds super boring but again, knowledge excites me, we've been over this.
I never thought I'd see the day when I can feel the little droplets of water on my skin, or smell the refreshing aroma created by the ozone and geosmen collected in each drop. Now this, this is a miracle.
I think my face might be revealing how I'm feeling right now, because I look up to see Bellamy looking intently at me.
Clearly, I am a little bit invested living one of my childhood fantasies right now, to really think about anything, while Wells is thinking ahead.
Wells looks at myself and Bellamy. "We need to collect this."
Bellmy stares at me for another second. I keep staring back. Then, he looks to Wells. "Whatever the hell you want." He walks back to the crowd of kids feeling the rain, Wells stomps away, and I'm still here, in awe of this rain. Something tells me this feud will only get worse.
Another crash of thunder radiates through the air.
————————————-
I woke up early this morning. Something didn't feel right, despite the water we got in our systems last night, and the beautiful rain storm.
Pretty much everyone was still asleep, a few people were up kind of sitting around like they were still coming out of sleep. Other than that I didn't see Wells anywhere. I figured I'd go and find him, see what he's doing.
After a few minutes of walking, I found Wells over in a small dirt clearing. he was hovering over two big holes, covering them with high piles of dirt. He was burying the two boys that had passed on the drop ship.
I'm kind of glad that I wasn't here until now. I can't stand to look at any lifeless kid out here. I can only hope enough of us stay alive, so we don't have to go through this too many more times.
"Hey" I say to Wells. He looks up at me, I'm turn I look at his hands holding the shovel. Wait a minute, his wrist band is gone."Wells what the hell happened to your wristband?"
He looks up at me almost like he's defeated. "Bellamy happened"
What does he mean Bellamy happened? "what did he do to you?"
"Not just about what he did. Him and his little minions dragged me out in the middle of the night and forced me to take my wristband off. He tried to convince me to take it off on my own will. Gave me his whole propaganda bullshit about how my father sent me down here to die. When I refused, everyone trapped me and held me down. They snapped it right off." Oh my God.
"Those crazy sons of bitches." I sigh out.
"Yeah, and not only that. Wanna know the icing on the cake? Kids got a gun."
A gun? First he comes down here, wearing a stolen guard uniform, not even a criminal and somehow snuck on the drop ship, all while yielding a gun we all know that doesn't belong to him. That only makes my curiosity of how he got down here skyrocket.
"A gun? There's something that we're not getting Wells. There's no reason he has a gun. We have to figure it out. He could be dangerous."
Wells looks at me knowingly. He drops his shovel and puts his coat back on. He picks up a pile of clothing, I'm guessing that belong to the two dead kids. "Yeah eventually. For now I'm going to focus on keeping us alive. I'm gonna take these back. Share them based on need. Just like back home...I'll see you aspen"
Before I can even respond, Wells walks away back to where we're setting up camp. He seems distant, defeated. Whatever went down last night seems to be really taking a toll on him.
Now I'm alone. I bring my hands to my face, and rub my eyes in attempts to clear my head. Im alone for the first time since the skybox, and all I can think about is Bellamy having a gun. It just doesn't make sense.
Okay Aspen, think. He has a gun, a guards uniform, and a sister who was locked up. I know he came down here for her, anyone could see that. I'm still stumped on the how. I'm normally good at figuring things out, again that's what I'm best at, solving problems. Quite literally what I was born to do.
Leave it to some jerk to have me completely stumped. I take a minute to close my eyes. I take a deep breath. Then I head back.
