Chapter 46: McCarroll Ranch

Y/N POV

Flashback

A Few Years Ago

Clem and I were on one horse while Carley and Scarlett were on the other as we ride down a road to the ranch.

Clem: AJ...We're coming.

I feel Clem's hands tighten around my waist as she begins to get nervous.

Y/N: Don't worry Clem. We're getting him back.

Carley: Damn right.

We rode closer and saw the ranch...on fire.

Y/N: Fuck.

Clem: No.

We ride up to the entrance, and someone shoots our horses. We use the horse as cover and shoot him. He tries to fire at us, but his gun is out of ammo.

We run up to him.

Clem: We're looking for a boy. He's about three years old. His name's Alvin Junior--

He gives us the middle finger.

Y/N: Figures.

I kick him in the face and knock him out.

Y/N: Keep moving. Scarlett stay behind your mother.

Scarlett: Okay.

We enter the ranch, and a scorched man trapped under debris grabs my foot.

Y/N: The fuck?!

Lloyd: Please. Please. Please kill me.

Y/N: Where are the children?

?: It hurts. Oh, my god, it hurts so bad. Kill me. Kill me!

I shoot him in the head.

We continue moving through the ranch. Three people are fired upon, and two of them die. a guy shoots back at the unseen attackers.

?: Eat some of this shit! Another one? Fuck you!

We hide as Eddie shoots at us. As he reloads, Carley shoots him in the shoulder.

?: Ahhhh! You stupid asshole!

We run up to the man and point our guns at him.

Clem: I'm not messing around! Tell me where the kids are!

?: Jesus! Alright, alright. That way... (points) There's a nursery. But I'm not letting one of you savages take a kid!

He pulls out a knife; I grab his arm and knee him in the face which knocks him out. we move past a car

Y/N: We can use this. Mom stay here with Scar and we'll look for AJ.

Carley: Okay babe. Be safe.

We walk up to the door of the nursery.

?: Sorry... Sorry... So sorry. Don't worry. We're leaving soon. I've just got to grab a few things. Just a few more things and we'll leave. Soon, we'll be far, far away from here.

Clem opens the door.

?: No! I won't let you...

She draws a gun, and Clem shoots her in the face.

Clem/Y/N: AJ...

Clem tries to open the locker, but it's locked.

I lean down and pick up the keys from the woman and use them to open the locker and we see AJ is curled up inside it, crying and covered in the girls blood.

Clem: AJ. It's us. Clem and Y/N.

Y/N: Hey bud.

Clem picks up AJ, and he screams upon noticing the girl's dead body.

Y/N: Keep your eyes on me buddy.

He does and I put a hand on his cheek.

Y/N: Let's get you outta here, okay?

We walk out of the nursery.

Carley: You got him?

Y/N: Yeah. We gotta go now though.

Carley: Okay.

Mom and Scarlett get in the backseats while o open the door for Clem and she sits in the passenger seat with AJ on her lap. I walk around and get in the drivers seat.

Clem uses a rag to wipe the blood of his face.

Clem: Okay. Now. Where to?

Clem looks at me.

Y/N: Can't go back to Richmond...this whole area is a war zone. Gotta...

AJ: Go?

Clem: Yeah. We have to go, AJ. This place, we can't stay here. It's not safe.

Y/N: But it's okay. We're survivors. And the first rule of survival is... Never go alone.

AJ: Never go alone. Mommy, daddy?

Clem: That's right. AJ...

Clem: We've really missed you. So much.

Y/N: We are so happy to have you back.

Clem: I know where we'll go.

Y/N: Do you now?

Clem smiles.

Clem: We'll go find ourselves a new home. Together as a family. And We'll never leave you again.

Y/N: I like the sound of that. What about you girls?

Scarlett: Yes!

Carley: I'm down.

AJ looks at them.

AJ: W-Who are they?

Y/N: That is your aunt Carley and her daughter Scarlett.

Scarlett: H-Hi.

Clem hands AJ to mom who sits him on his lap and instantly clings to her.

Carley: Just like his father.

I smile.

I put my hand on the stick shaft, and Clem puts her hand on top of mine. I start the car.

Y/N: Let's go.
