Eddie's POV:
"What is your sister's problem, Henderson?" I turn with harsh eyes to Dustin who is still staring off at y/n as though he is a lost puppy. She's returned to Robin's table and is being introduced to Steve "The Hair" Harrington and I roll my eyes as I watch him, assess her. He obviously likes what he sees because he leans in and talks enthusiastically, waving his hands animatedly. She nods along to what he is saying, a genuine smile on her face and I grow more upset as I watch her laugh at his jokes. Of course she doesn't see a problem with him, but I'm the jerk! Typical.
"I'm not sure what has gotten into her. Y/n has got some stuff going on right now, but she's usually really funny and cool. I'll talk to her after school and see what's up." Dustin murmurs, picking at his food. I raise my eyebrows at him as I pop a pretzel in my mouth. Funny and cool, huh? She's been a royal bitch since the moment I've met her. I couldn't imagine her being funny or cool, but as I look up again I notice she has Robin and Steve laughing and they both seemed charmed by her entirely, as though they are hanging on her every breath. I groan and put my pretzels back in my bag and throw it over my shoulder.
"I need a smoke," I grunt. "I'll see you later." The guys all wave farewell and I head off towards the back of the school and into the woods. There is a forgotten picnic table hidden there that I like to sit at. I set down my bag and pull out a joint, lighting it and sticking it between my teeth. I pull out a piece of paper I had been writing some chords down on and continued playing with a rhythm I had stuck in my head, jotting down different variations to try later.
Suddenly, a twig snaps and I snuff out what little there is left of my joint and hastily throw the rest on the ground. When I look up y/n has stumbled into the clearing, a cigarette in her mouth and a sour expression on her face. When she sees me she rips the cigarette from her lips and hides it behind her back. I smirk, tucking my hand under my chin.
"So the almighty y/n smokes," I tease, shuffling my papers around until I collected them all and then stuff them into my bag. She sighs heavily and takes the cigarette from behind her back and puts it out before flicking it away.
"You better not tell my brother," she warns, her eyes narrowing. Her arms came around to hug herself as a strong wind blows in, a chill carrying.
"Here," I get up and offer her my leather jacket but she shakes her head. She's stubborn and she plants her feet even though I can see her bottom lip quivering. I sigh, exasperated before moving until I am standing behind her. I place my coat over her shoulders and she at least does not shrug it off.
"Contrary to your opinion I am not a bad person," I sigh, annoyed. "That being said, I make no promises to keep your dirty little secret. Especially with how you have been acting towards me."
Y/n regards me coldly and I'm left wondering for what feels like the millionth time today what I did to deserve it. I mean I don't even know her.
"My behavior towards you is well deserved don't you think? Considering when I met you, you were being escorted to the principal's office for fighting and then when I was finally able to carry out a conversation with you, you were short with me. You didn't care about the class we were in or the fact that you not having your textbook could effect me. So yea, I'm annoyed with you. I don't like you. I don't like you hanging out with my brother. Is it really that hard to understand why?"
As she spoke her voice rose slightly and she bought her arms back up and crossed them over her chest. Her eyebrows furrowed and she took a step toward me. Her proximity throws me off and I'm momentarily startled as she shrugs off my jacket and shoves it into my chest.
"Stay away from my brother, Munson. I won't have you rubbing off on him." She warns before she stomps off. I watch her go.
Only after she is gone do I think of a million different things I could have said. Dustin is like a little brother to me. Ever since meeting him he has positively influenced me, not the other way around. I've been going to class, our D&D campaigns have been better, and I actually feel like I'm going to graduate this year.
