Eddie's POV:
"You haven't been to school in two weeks," Dustin complains. He's sitting on my couch as I rummage through the fridge for a Yoo-Hoo, a cigarette dangling from my lips. I close the fridge and crack one open looking over at him, exhausted. My hair is in knots, I can't remember when I last showered, and I'm wearing my grungiest sweatpants. "It's time to get back out there Eddie.""Back out there?" I ask sitting down at the table and running a hand down my face.
"Yea back to school and back to your normal routine. You've been wallowing long enough. Why don't you come back and try talking to Y/N?"
"She doesn't want to talk to me."
Dustin gets up off the couch and starting to pace around the living room. "You need to go to school and face her. There needs to be a grand gesture."
"I hurt her, Dustin," I say defeated and Dustin stops to look at me. "I don't deserve her."
"That's not for you to decide, idiot," he argues and I take a swig of my drink. "Only my sister can decide that but you should at least give yourself a fighting chance."
We grow silent and I look out the window, watching a dog chase a butterfly across the street.
"How is she?" I ask softly, not looking at him.
"She's been alright. She's obviously been sad but she puts on a front so that I don't worry. Gareth has been keeping her company a lot lately. He walks her to class and has been picking us up for school."
I turn my head and regard him. He's looking at some books on one of the shelves behind the television, running his fingers over the spines.
"Gareth?" I ask, my voice harsh even to my own ears. Dustin turns with his eyebrows furrowed.
"Yea," Dustin nods nonchalantly. "They've been hanging out a lot lately."
I smack the table making the surface shake and Dustin jumps. I pinch the bridge of my nose and squint my eyes shut, my whole upper body trembling.
"Damn it," I whisper and stand. Dustin watches me, a question in his eyes.
"What time is it?" I ask him.
"Seven oh eight."
"Stay right there," I say, pointing at him with a nod and he gives me a thumbs up.
I shower as quickly as I can, detangling my matted hair and getting out. I get dressed in an Iron Maiden sweater and torn jeans. I put on a few rings but I don't bother with the rest of my jewelry. I run a brush throw my damp curls and head out to meet Dustin who is grinning from ear to ear. I grab my keys off the counter as he bounces up and down on the balls of his feet. I point to the door and he bolts out to the van, his backpack smacking in between his shoulders.
Dustin continues to try to hype me up as we pull into the parking lot. I smoke a cigarette as we get out, my stomach in knots and I see her from across the lot. Y/N is walking beside Gareth, looking up at him with a smile. She's got on a dark green turtleneck under a black jumper, her hair up in a high ponytail. My heart clenches in my chest as she laughs with him. Gareth reaches down and places his hand on the small of her back, pulling her closer to his side as a group of jocks barrel past them and my mouth fills with bile.
"I can't do this," I choke out and put the brakes on. Dustin grabs my arm and shoves me forward. He reaches up and plucks the cigarette from my lips as he continues to drag me closer to the doors.
"Don't be a bitch, Munson." He growls into my ear and I square my shoulders. I shove away from him frustrated and he slaps me on the back once more before turning away from me and disappearing down the hall.
