The tension in our walk remains after the previous night and through the day a few of the dwarves come to pat me on the back and say how worried they were about me. I feel bad for running off like that but I couldn't face Fili. I thought he was angry at me but when he saw how scared I was, he only wanted me to come back to him. Ty spends his time by my side until Bilbo rides up next to me. Quite badly might I say.

"Minx? Is it alright if I have a word?" His timid voice makes me conscious of my surroundings again and I change into myself again to walk beside him.

"Go for it Bilbo." I smile up at him and pick up my pace to walk beside his pony, my tail swishing cheerily.

"It's just that, when you ran off, your Uncle Thorin was absolutely terrified of losing you. He really treasures you and I'm fairly sure he sees you as his daughter, in a way." Bilbo smiles down to me and his eyes twinkle.

"Well, he took me in, I grew up in his home with his nephews. He was determined to help me find out more about what I am and he spent countless days training me and caring for me if I fell ill. I see him as my father figure since I don't remember anything from before the first wolf." I explain while Bilbo looks ahead to Thorin admirably.

I catch a soft "Ahh." escape Bilbo's mouth and he quickly snaps out of his daze to face me again.

"After Thorin started more intense training with Fili and Kili he handed me over to Dwalin for 2 days a week of training. Of course, when I came of age Thorin presented me with a beautiful sword he crafted himself. It is perfect. My perfect fighting companion. I couldn't have asked anymore from him. He saved my life and gave me a home and a family. I will be forever grateful for it." I pat the hilt of my sword which pokes up over my back as it's scabbard is strapped to my bags. Bilbo again smiles down at me and then his brow furrows.

"Do you not want to share a pony Minx? Your feet must be awfully sore." I chuckle and shake my head.

"They are a little sore but I am used to it." I smile up at Bilbo but he looks confused. "I'm a wolf remember? We don't usually wear shoes." He laughs and I join him as the night descends on us.

~•~

"We will rest here tonight! Gloin, get a fire going. Bombur we are all hungry! Fili, Kili you look after the ponies. Make sure you watch them." Thorin barks orders from up ahead and everyone dismounts, getting to their tasks. As I help unbuckle Ty's bags I pick up on some of Thorin's conversation with the wizard.

-

"A farmer and his family used to live here. I think it would be wiser to move on. We could make for the hidden valley! The elves could help us! We need food, rest, advice!"

"You know I will NOT go near that place!"

-

I tuned out after that as I understood entirely why Thorin was reluctant to go to the elves for help. The same story I've heard a thousand times about the Elves of Mirkwood and King Thranduil who would not risk his kin against the dragon to save the Dwarves culture. Heck I understand that part, but to refuse to even shelter them or help rebuild their lives elsewhere? How cruel.

I am shaken from my thoughts as my knees buckle and I fall to the ground at the sudden lightness with a shake. I find Ty's arms underneath me and I laugh at what I've done.
