Akros reappeared in a dark void, not knowing where he was. The hot stench of sulfur and brimstone told him he was in the Abyss, but the smell didn't make sense given the scenery. It was similar to the Shadow Realm, but there was no surface for him to emerge from. He could not discern direction or anything else, and was very perplexed. He could breathe if he chose to, but he no longer had a need for oxygen. His body was far beyond that stage.

Suddenly the dark space became distorted as a spatial vortex appeared in front of his eyes. There was a glimmer of light in the center, giving Akros a clear point to see. He reached out to it tentatively, but before his claws touched it the vortex vanished with a low hum.

Akros assumed what he had just seen was a spatial vortex, but didn't know much besides that. He tried to move using his wings to propel himself, but there was no point of reference. It was as if he was blind, there was no way to know he was moving off of sight.

Other spatial vortexes appeared and disappeared around Akros. Each lasted 3-10 seconds before vanishing, making timing crucial if he wanted to touch one. Without air to displace, his wings gave him no propulsion. He was forced to use what little knowledge of spatial magic he gained from Morwen to lock onto a vortex and gravitate himself to it with Abyssal Grasp magic.

As he was pulled through the vortex, he found himself in a new area. A open space with flowing magma, black volcanoes, and ashen trees that reminded him of palm trees. This was clearly part of the Abyss, but why was it inside a spatial vortex? Perhaps it was a broken off part of the Abyss, isolated by the shattering of space? Akros could only imagine the reasoning behind this phenomenon.

The fragment world he was currently in was small, likely no large than 20 miles in diameter. It was a circular cut of land that ended in spatial distortions. These raptures of space formed the end of the fragment world, cutting the land off.

Akros used space magic to protect his body, then entered a spatial fracture to exit the fragment world. As he reentered the black void, he had a rough idea of what was happening.

As a demon lord, the Abyss portal autonomously sent me to the deep Abyss where space seems to be fractured. Since my level of spatial magic was actually necessary to keep me from being torn apart by distorted space, I suppose this is what makes the deep Abyss unaccessable to non-demon lord demons. Only a demon with strong enough spatial magic can survive this world, and one that doesn't need oxygen. I probably have to settle down in a fragment world, if I had to guess. Let's just find one that I like. My Shadow Legion is okay, so I have loads of time.

He used spatial and gravitational magic to reach other spatial warps, visiting other fragment worlds. Most of the worlds he came across had features that were not appealing to him, such as a lack of size or a hellish environment like the upper levels of the Abyss. Akros preferred a vast, cooler environment. Room to expand structures and field test magic or weaponry was always good to have, and his body was built for colder environments.

Shadow demons were uniquely genetically designed to handle environments of absolutely freezing temperatures, more specifically the Shadow Realm. A plane of existence with no heat at all, the epitome of cold. Akros' body featured a stubborn amount of warmth at all times, making hotter environments less comfortable. Even though his demon blood made the Abyss feel like home, the 50 years he spent in a temperate world with seasons made him remember the value of cool air.

As Akros traversed these fragment worlds with extremely harsh environments, he discovered many monsters with demon bloodlines. They bore demon horns, but were of low intelligence and lacked magic power. He estimated these monsters were fit for the climate of the fragment world they were in, and would obey any demon lord who settled in their world. It only made sense, as low-rank demons likely would not survive the environment and would not be suitable slaves for required construction and other manual labor.
