chapter fourteen
fear and loathing.♡ ♥ ♡
Juno didn't want to go back home. The terrifying thought of having all her friends and family, family being her mother, being completely pissed ( which was understandable ) made her feel nauseous. She was glad Tory wasn't all that mad.
She looked at her phone again and scrolled through the notifications, her stomach sinking when there still was no messages or missed calls from her mom. She sighed and leaned her head back against the tree, catching a glimpse of the twinkling sky before her eyes shut and she was met with darkness.
The running river and the crickets filled her ears as she felt Eli grab her hand gently-as though she was fine China that was to break if you looked at it wrong-from beside her. She opened her eyes to look at him only to find him extremely focused on drawing shapes into her palm. The brightness of her phone illuminated their faces more than the moon for the moon was hidden behind the tree branches.
"Do you want to go to the car," Eli said, his eyes flicking to the grave not too far away and then the night sky above them. "Its dark."
Juno licked her bleeding and chapped lips as she looked at him, scanning his face for an answer. An answer on what she should do, she didnt think she could speak for herself. It seemed as though Eli was doing the same thing.
"I don't know," Juno replied, watching him fiddle with the sleeves of his sweater. It kept getting stuck to the tree and she figured it might just become thread in the next few weeks.
"Do you want to stay here?" Juno looked at the grave and felt her eyes begin to water for the third time that day.
"No," she shook her head. "But I dont want to leave like- in the car."
"Want to go for a walk?"

The waterfall was beautiful, the moonlight shone on it just right and the chirping of the crickets didnt make Juno feel off like it usually did whenever she went camping with her dad. For some reason, she always thought she'd accidentally step on one and a whole army would come after her.
Not tonight though. Tonight was all about washing off whatever feelings she has felt today ( and for years ) and letting it all go. The water just below the waterfall was calling her name like she was a sailor and the water was a siren.
She decided this as soon as she saw the waterfall on their little exploration. She didnt know how they didnt see it before but it was pretty small so that's probably why.
She moved closer to it, careful not to fall into the river as she did so. She set her flashlight down after examining around the water to make sure there was nothing dangerous around and began to strip.
"What are you doing?" Eli whispered.
"Going for a swim." Eli watched as she began to unbutton her jeans.
"What if there's like. . . sharks in the water?" he asked.
"Im sure they're all sleeping," she muttered. "I'll try not to wake them."
She looked at him expectantly, in a way that was asking 'are you joining me?', but he began shaking his head before she could open her mouth.
"Im not going in."
"Okay," Juno shrugged. "Im not going to force you, that'd make me a bad girlfriend."
He watched as she slowly went in, his eyes flickering to her clothes not too far away from him. "You're going in?"
"Yup."
"What if there's," he hesitated as if embarrassed to continue his sentence.
"Monsters?" she questioned, her lips slowly tugging into a smile as she turned back to look at him.
"Yeah," he said. "Monsters."
"Well, like I said, most of them are probably sleeping. Not a lot of things like to chill by waterfalls either," she shrugged.
She walked far enough out that the water was just under her bra. She was surprised of how shallow it was and how the bottom was just rocks. She half worried if she was going to be freaked out by little plants.
She jumped slightly when Eli put his hands on her waist.
"Holy crap I didnt even hear you get in," she breathed.
He just sent her a shy smile before bringing her into a hug. She relaxed into his embrace and held her breath. She felt them begin to tilt. It was already too late when she realized they were falling into the water. Her side hit the rocks below and she used her hands to push herself up.
She gasped when she broke the surface and wiped her face is she could see. She was met with a giggling Eli who had his hands up in defense.
"You sneak," she scoffed, smile tugging at her own lips.
She took a step forward and grabbed Eli's hands so he couldn't step away. His giggling immediately stopped as he braced himself to be pushed but was surprised when she just hugged him. Her arms were over his shoulders and his found the perfect place around her torso. She lifted her head off of his chest to look at him but smiled to herself when she saw his hair in his eyes.
"Im going to miss them," she mumbled, pushing his wet hair away from his eyes and feeling her heart ache. Them begin the cat and her dad.
"You already do," Eli mumbled. He leaned into her hand that rested on his cheek and closed his eyes.
She sighed, knowing he was right, and moved her hands so they interlocked behind his neck.
"I love you," she said. "Im sorry."
"Im sorry too," his cheeks flushed when she drew a heart on his skin. "I love you, im sorry this happened."
"Its okay," she whispered, though he could barely process before her lips were on his.
