chapter twelve
home wrecker.♡ ♥ ♡
Juno's heart caught in her throat as she continued to nudge the cat, her cat, her baby, awake. It was no use, the poor thing didnt even twitch. Eli wrapped his arms around a confused Juno, a confused and upset girl who did not feel like crying.
"Kitty," she whispered, holding her hand out to nudge the cat again. It was no use since she didnt even budge.
"What are we supposed to do?" she whispered, her voice cracking which only made Eli blink back his tears.
"We'll take her to the nearest vet," he whispered, the calmness of his voice scared him for he thought his would crack too. "See if they can help."
"And if they can't?"
"We'll figure it out when that happens," he mumbled, leading her to her to the passenger side of the car after closing the door to Agent Coulson's kennel.
Once he sat on his side, the drivers seat, he reached over and buckled Juno's seatbelt who did nothing but stare straight ahead and bite her lip. Eli wished she'd stop biting her lip but as he put the car on drive and made way to the nearest vet that they saw a ways back, he felt a small sense of pride realizing she had not bitten her lip since they had left.
A small part of him believed it was because he made her comfortable, the other part believed it was because she was too preoccupied with other things to give herself the comforting feeling of the small pain. What ever it was, it made her stop for a little bit and that was all that mattered.
"Are we sure we should even take her to the vet?" Juno mumbled.
The car radio was off and Eli's clammy hand held Juno's tightly. She refused to look anywhere but straight ahead because she feared her heart would jump into her throat and her vision would become blurry with tears.
"I mean yeah," he said, looking over at her briefly. "Dont cats have nine lives, maybe she has more."
"I dont know Eli," Juno signed and pulled her hand away from his. "It doesn't seem like that this time."
"You can't think like that."
"Like what?"
"Like all negative," he scoffed.
"Im just not getting my hopes up," she rolled her eyes. "That's all."
He stayed silent and Juno turned her body to look out of the tinted window. She felt her phone vibrate and looked down to silence it before turning back to the window.
The two weren't really in any rush because they feared the inevitable once they were to reach their destination, but Eli still found himself driving 10 over the speed limit. Juno was humming to herself and counting the trees that they had passed to try and pretend nothing was happening.
She didnt remember it taking this long to get into the nearest city. It had been at least 20 minutes since they had left and she thought the nearest city was 15 minutes away from where they were.
"How much longer until we get there?" she sighed, turning to look at him.
"15 more minutes I think," he mumbled.
She sat up in her seat and raised an eyebrow in confusion. "What? I didn't think we were that far away."
"Yeah it took us like 40 minutes to get to that rock thing," he explained.
"Time flies when you're having fun I guess," she shrugged.
"Takes forever when you're dreading everything," Eli added.
