chapter sixteen,
❝what happened in san juan!
A J A X

━━━They had landed South Carolina, and Coach Hedge had been shocked when he found out the town was called Buford ━ which is the name of Leo Valdez's three-legged table. Of course, this had been news to Ajax, and he wonders how in the world Leo managed to make or befriend a three-legged table that now acts as Coach Hedge on the Argo II.

This part of South Carolina seems to consist mostly of overgrown fields, punctuated by telephone poles and trees covered in kudzu vines. The town of Buford itself is a collection of portable metal sheds ━ six or seven, which is probably the town's population.

Ajax felt much better to be back into the sunlight. He hates shadow-traveling ━ it makes him feel as though he is a ghost, passing through things and the fabric of reality, and the last thing he wants to be is something like Reyna's worst memories.

He can already begin to feel Nico di Angelo fading into the shadows. Ajax wishes he knew how to help him ━ to heal him ━ but if he used his light powers to heal him... He might accidentally wash away Nico's power of shadow travel altogether, though temporarily, and they don't have the time for that.

(Besides, Ajax isn't sure if he can take the strain... He is already using his strength elsewhere...)

Apparently, the Athena Parthenos had wanted them to visit a place with educational value because she'd landed right next to a historical marker that reads Masscare of Buford. Reyna's tent sits in a grove of trees about thirty yards back from the road. Nearby lays a rectangular cairn ━ hundreds of stones piled in the shape of an oversized grace with a granite obelisk for a heart stone. Scattered around it are faded wreathed and crushed banquets of plastic flowers, which makes the place seem even sadder.

Aurum and Argentum are playing keep away in the woods with one of Coach's handballs. Ever since getting repaired by the Amazons, they had been frisky and full of energy ━ not at all like their owner.

Reyna sits cross-legged at the entrance of the tent, staring at the memorial obelisk. She hasn't said much to anyone ━ not even Ajax ━ since they'd fled San Juan two days ago. They'd also not encountered any monsters, which makes Ajax uneasy. They have no idea what happened to Hylla, Thalia, or the giant Orion.

(Though, Ajax hasn't tried to contact them... He's been using so much of his strength these last couple of days, ever since his dream after their last shadow travel, that he isn't sure if he could even conjure up a dream to check in on anyone...)
