Until your little secret comes out.
Flashing through his mind ━ the movement of Bryce's spear, the line of blood across Reyna's face ━ Dave, striking him across the face ━ until your little secret comes out ━ Valentina and Bryce ━ he hurt her ━ and Nico, reminding Bryce of how he was just as bad as the redcoats ━ until your little secret comes out ━ for he broke promises to someone who was meant to be most dear to him ━ and Julian, calling his daughters' devil children, hurting them ━ until your little secret comes out ━ and Reyna's grimace of pain from the pilum ━ Bryce's words ━ and the blood sliding down her cheek, dark red liquid, sliding off her cheek and hitting the earth ━ until your little secret comes out.
Ajax can barely remember what he did.
All of the warmth is sucked away from the clearing. All of the warmth and sunlight fills Ajax, to where Coach Hedge and Reyna have to advert their eyes from him, and Nico collapses on the ground instantly. The spartoi begin to shake. A shadow passes over the sun.
"You want secrets?" whispers Ajax.
He jerks his head, and instantly, Bryce shouts in pain, holding his arm. Ajax takes a step toward him, and Bryce stumbles, clutching his face, where both of his nostrils are bleeding. His nose is even more deformed.
Ajax grabs Bryce's probatio tablet. "Reyna was right," he says as he rips it off his neck. "You aren't worthy of this."
Bryce doubles over in pain, clutching his abdomen. Ajax places a hand to his chest and the Imperial Gold chest plate melts right off, simmering the ground. His arms begin to turn black from the inside out ━ he begins to shake, as though covered in chills ━ he opens his mouth in shock ━ he drops his pilum as his fingers begin to freeze.
"You have made many oaths, legacy of Orcus." Ajax's breath steams in the cold. "Yet you have kept none. Have you learned nothing? You took an oath to the legion. You broke its rules. You inflicted pain on others. You killed your own centurion."
"No, I━" Bryce sucks in his breath, but the sound he makes is as though his lungs are collapsing in on him.
"And here you are again, lying," Ajax snaps. "You lie and you lie and you break promises. You promised Valentina you would take care of her, no? But you hurt her━you hurt her the worst. You should've died for the crimes. That was the punishment you deserved. But instead, you got banished. Some people may call that luck."
