chapter twenty-six,
❝before he fell, he flew!
A J A X

━━━He had fallen asleep on the back of Blackjack, who he recognized as Percy Jackson's horse, also the horse that had helped him escape Camp Half-Blood many months ago.

He is in a massive stone room, the ceiling open to the night sky, but the walls are twenty feet high and polished marble. Scattered around the room are wooden crates━some cracked and tipped over, bronze tools spilling out: compasses, a watch, and a bunch of other things.

Ajax huddles in the corner of the room, shaking from cold and fear. He feels smaller than usual... younger. His legs and arms are scraped as if he'd been dragged to this room━and something tells him he had been dragged here. He wears a dirtied Greek tunic and worn sandals.

Then the double oak doors open. Two guards in bronze armor march in, holding an old man between them. They flung him to the floor in a heap and Ajax's heart lurches.

"Father!" He scrambles toward the man. His robes were in tatters, his hair streaked with grey, and his beard is long and curly. His nose is broken, lips bloody. He takes his father's head into his arms. "Father, what did they do to you?"

He only groans in response, incoherent nonsense.

Ajax shakes from anger. He turns to the guards and shouts, "I'll kill you all!"

"There will be no killing today," says a new voice.

The guards move to the side. Behind them stands a tall man in white robes. He wears a thin circlet of gold on his head. His beard is pointed and his eyes glitter cruelly. "You helped the Athenian kill my Minotaur, Daedalus. You turned my own daughter against me."

"You did that yourself, Your Majesty," croaks Ajax's father.

A guard plants a kick in the old man's ribs. He groans in agony. Ajax shouts, "Stop! Stop it!"

"You love your maze so much," says the king. "I have decided to let you stay here. This will be your new workshop. Make me wonders. Amuse me. Every maze needs a monster. You shall be mine!"

"I don't fear you," groans Daedalus.

The king smiles coldly. He locks eyes on Ajax. "A man who cares about his son, eh? Displease me, old man, and the next time my guards inflict punishment, it will be on him."
