━━━Sky-diving straight into a volcano is not on Reyna's bucket list, thank you very much. Her first view of southern Italy is from five thousand feet in the air. To the west, along the crescent of the Gulf of Naples, the lights of sleeping cities glitter in the predawn gloom. A thousand feet below her, a half-mile-wide caldera yawns at the top of a mountain, white steam pluming from the center.
Reyna's disorientation takes a moment to subside. Shadow travel leaves her groggy and nauseous as if she'd been trashed from the cold waters of the frigidarium into the sauna at a Roman bathhouse.
Then, she realizes she's suspended in midair. Gravity takes hold, and she begins to fall.
"Ajax!" His name leaves her lips without her thinking. The son of Apollo clutches her left hand. He's still here. A bit of relief hits her chest until she remembers they are falling into a volcano.
"Nico!" she screams.
"Pan's pipes!" yells Coach Hedge.
"Reyna!" Ajax shouts.
"Whaaaaaaa!" Nico flails, almost slipping out of Reyna's grip. She holds tight. Ajax grabs Coach Hedge by the shirt collar as he starts to tumble away. If they got separated now, they are dead.
They plummet towards the volcano as their largest piece of luggage ━ the forty-foot-tall Athena Parthenos ━ trails after them, leashed to a harness on Nico's back like a very ineffective parachute.
"That's Vesuvius below us!" Reyna shouts over the wind. "Nico, teleport us out of here!"
His eyes are wild and unfocused. His dark feathery hair whips around in his face. "I━I can't! No strength!"
Hedge bleats, "News flash, kids! Goats can't fly! Zap us out of here or we're gonna get flattened into an Athena Parthenos omelet!"
Reyna tries to think. Ajax would most likely be fine from this height (she can't accept his death). She can accept her death if she had to, but if the Athena Parthenos is destroyed, their quest would fail. She could not accept that.
"Shadow travel!" she orders. "I'll lend you my strength."
