"Ah, back again? Not so smug this time around, I see... I would even say you're slightly scared, if I may be so bold?" The same angel receptionist from last time greeted Alexander, her voice dripping with syrupy sweetness that grated on his nerves. She leaned back in her pristine, glowing white chair. The air in the reception area, usually sterile and calm, felt heavy with her smug satisfaction.
He crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw tightening. "No, you may not be bold. I'm only here because the higher-up angels called me. Now, if you'll excuse me." He started to walk past her desk, his strides purposeful, eager to escape her irritating presence.
She let out a soft, knowing chuckle, her fingers still dancing across the holographic keyboard that floated above her desk. "Nah, nah, ah. Actually, you don't have a meeting with the High Council today," she said, her eyes still fixed on the luminous display.
Alexander stopped, a cold knot forming in his stomach. He turned slowly, a deep frown creasing his brow. "Then who do I have a meeting with? Who called me here?" The angel finally looked over at him, her lips curving into a smirk that didn't quite reach her cold, calculating eyes. "You must be coming in for your involvement with that human woman. All of Heaven is talking about it."
A jolt of pure fury shot through Alex.
He strode over, planting himself directly in front of her desk, leaning forward slightly, his gaze piercing. How was it possible for all of Heaven to know his private business? This couldn't be good news. Had his connection with Lily finally come to judgment? "And just how does everyone around here know about Lily? Is there no privacy left in the realms of angels?"
She shrugged, unfazed by his anger, casually looking back at her fast-typing fingers. "News spreads fast, Guardian. Especially when it involves a forbidden bond. You'll see who you're meeting with as you walk through the door." He rolled his eyes, a flicker of fear mingling with his annoyance. A bright, blinding white doorway shimmered into existence beside him, radiating an almost painful purity. It opened wide, revealing nothing but an overwhelming, brilliant light.
He steeled himself, taking a deep breath, and made his way towards it, but not before the angel delivered one last venomous whisper: "Hope he chews you up and spits you out." He stepped through the door, and it closed tightly behind him, swallowing him into its overwhelming brilliance.
The sensation of passing through the portal was unlike anything he'd ever experienced. It wasn't merely teleportation; it was a complete dissolution and reformation of his very being. For a fleeting second, he was nothing but pure light, then solidifying, he found himself suddenly in a beautiful, expansive office. The air here was subtly different - lighter, clearer, carrying a faint scent of ozone and fresh rain. A massive, polished oak desk sat proudly in front of a pair of towering, floor-to-ceiling windows.
He was the only one in the office at the moment. He walked over, drawn by the view, and realized he was, surprisingly, back on Earth. The windows overlooked a breathtaking skyline of a vibrant, impossibly clean city bathed in the golden glow of a clear blue sky, with boats zipping across the shimmering water below.
Alex pulled out the executive-style chair in front of the desk and sat down, a strange sense of anticipation building in his chest. Just as he settled, a discreet side door opened. A man, who looked to be around thirty with long, wavy brown hair, a perfectly tailored dark blue suit, and an aura of calm, unpretentious power, walked inside. He was carrying an impossible stack of papers, struggling visibly, barely keeping them from tumbling to the floor.
Alexander quickly stood up, his guardian instincts kicking in. He strode over to help, taking the first few layers of papers off the precarious stack, easing the man's burden significantly.
"Oh, you made it! Hello, and thank you for the help. Sometimes, I must say, it's hard to keep order, but I'll never give up trying to help everyone," the man said warmly, his voice surprisingly gentle and genuine. He had an easy smile that immediately put Alex at ease.
"Sometimes, I must say, it's hard to keep order, but I'll never give up trying to help everyone." As he spoke, he and Alex carefully placed all the papers on his desk. The man sighed, pushing a strand of hair out of his face with a relaxed gesture before extending a hand to Alexander with a friendly, welcoming smile. "Nice to finally meet you. I've been hearing about you all over Heaven. It's nice to finally meet you in person."
Alex shook the man's hand. His grip was firm, yet soft, radiating a quiet strength.
Alex felt a strange sense of familiarity wash over him, a feeling of recognition that he couldn't place. He knew this presence, though he'd never encountered it directly. "Ahh, you don't know of me, huh?" the man chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I thought everyone knew of God. I didn't think I would have to introduce myself, but umm, hello, I'm God."
Alexander's eyes widened in disbelief, and he instinctively snatched his hand back as if burned. His jaw dropped. He couldn't believe his ears. Was he really meeting God right now? The Almighty? The Creator? Was God about to send him to Hell for getting involved with Lily? Was He angry with him for daring to love a human? A thousand anxious, panicked thoughts raced through his mind, his breath catching in his throat.
God seemed to read Alexander's rushing thoughts, his gentle smile unwavering. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down, son. I've barely said two words to you; don't freak out on me," God said, holding up his hands in a placating gesture.
Alex let out a shaky breath, forcing himself to nod. He tried to calm his hammering heart. God gestured for him to take a seat, which he did, sinking into the plush chair.
God then moved behind his own desk, settling in. "Yeah, just relax. Those days of wrath and smiting are mostly behind me now. I just want to talk to you, and... give you something." Alex folded his hands in his lap, listening intently to his every word.
"I was wrong to never give Lily a guardian angel," God began, his voice tinged with a faint, ancient regret. "I was in love with her mother, and when I was rejected, I allowed my pain to take it out on an innocent child. It was wrong. A flaw in my judgment. Now, I know her father is after her, and though I can't directly intervene in this earthly conflict - rules are rules, even for Me - I wanted to take away some of your worry. You, Alexander, should be allowed to love who you want without fear of consequence to your very existence."
God stopped talking, his gaze softening as he held his hand up.
It began to glow, not with blinding intensity, but with a bright, comforting blue light that filled the office. Alex felt a profound warmth, like liquid starlight, spread through his entire body, starting from his core and radiating outwards. His hands trembled, not from fear, but from the overwhelming power and grace, his nails digging into the arms of the chair as he instinctively braced himself, tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. "You were a good man, Alexander. You gave your own life to save your little sister from your abusive parents, and you've been a consistently good guardian angel, protecting every human ever given to you. For that, I'm grateful. You deserve this gift." God lowered his hand, the celestial glow fading, a serene, knowing smile on his face as he leaned his head slightly on his hand, looking at Alexander, who was now trembling with awe and relief.
Alexander stood in shock, his mouth wide open, speechless, tears streaming down his face. "Oh my God, thank you... I mean, oh my, thank you so much," he stammered, overwhelmed.
God chuckled, a rich, full sound that seemed to resonate through the very fabric of existence, as he stood from his seat, placing his hands behind his back. "You're welcome, son. Now, you're free to go. Just promise me one thing."
Alex immediately nodded. Of course, he would do anything for Him after such an incredible blessing. "Yes, sir. Anything."
"He killed my first love, so would you please kick his ass for me?" God asked, a mischievous glint in his eye.
Alex couldn't help but laugh, a genuine, joyful sound that bounced off the office walls. That was a completely unexpected, utterly human comment from the Divine. "Yes, sir, we'll do our best." With that, a doorway shimmering with blinding light opened beside Alexander, different from the pure white he'd entered through, more like a gateway to his renewed purpose. He smiled at God one last time, a profound gratitude and exhilarating sense of freedom in his heart, before walking through the blinding light, ready to face the world, and Alistair, by Lily's side.
(Mia note: no more side effects of them being together sounds good to me
