Apparently, Lovino wasn't the only one who noticed the quickly thickening smoke and the smell of gasoline. Alfred, as well as many other customers, had noticed a small fire that was burning through a tablecloth. The flames were already rapidly eating up the table they were started on. A few tried to put the fire out, but because of its speedy growth, their attempts were futile. Lovino and Alfred locked eyes for a moment. At first they thought they had the same idea, but one couldn't be any more different from the other.

"Run." Thought Lovino.

"Put it out." Thought Alfred.

One man ran in the direction of the door, and the other ran straight for the flames. Lovino was shocked. He was sure that Alfred was going to run away like everyone else. He would later learn that passing up the opportunity to be the hero and help someone was not something Al was likely to do. For a brief moment, he stared in a sort of admiration for the foolishly brave Alfred before realizing his situation. "Did he really just run into a burning building? For what? Everybody has already left th-" Lovino finally realized why the American ran back to the building. There was one more person still in the flaming restaurant. His grandfather. The owner of the restaurant. Lovi dashed back insidein hopes of finding the two who were inside, shouting for them over the sound of crackling wood and fire.

"Nonno! Alfred!" he yelled, hoping for some sort of response. Luckily, that was just what he got. A strangled cough came from a figure who wad hunched over not to far from where Lovino was standing. Though he was close, he knew that he would have to be quick to save his grandpa and Alfred. Careful to avoid the the falling beams covered in embers, he rushed over to the soind of the coughing. Just as he was approaching his grandpa, he was halted by a piece of ceiling falling in his path. His way was blocked. He was going to have to find another some other path. Before he could find a detour, he spotted Alfred across the blazing room.

"Get out of here! I'll help him! Just go!"
He shouted to Lovino, who refused to leave without knowing his grandpa would come out alive. "If you stay any longer, you'll die!" The young Italian weighed out his options. If he left, how did he know that he could trust Alfred to save his grandpa? But on the other hand, if he stayed any longer, he knew his chances of living were very small.
Before a decision was made, Lovi heard the hoarse voice of his grandfather. It was so faint. He could barely hear it over the roaring fire.

"Lovino. You must leave. I'll be ok. Go."
With tears in his eyes, he looked at his grandfather's figure, the way his breath was labored and harsh in the thick, hot air, how rough his voice sounded. He thought about whether this would be the last time he would ever see his grandpa. To think that he may never see him again made his heart feel like it weighed thousand pounds. Finally, Lovino couldn't take the sad look on his nonno's face, and he ran. He sprinted out of the burning building and towards the chaos of the parking lot.

Paramedics, firemen and police were rushing around. Parents tried to locate their children in a panic. Young couples held each other, glad to have made it out. Lovino noticed the burning pain in his lungs only when he stopped running and collapsed onto the concrete. Noticing his heavy couging, a middle aged paramedic approached him and offered to take him to an ambulance. Much persuasion was needed to get the young man off the ground.

Despite the fact that he almost died that night, he simply could not get his mind off of Alfred. Because of him, his grandfather made it out of the fire. Luckily, he had spotted to two walking out of the destroyed building earlier and rushed to help them. They were quickly rushed to a hospital. The doctors had told Lovino that Alfred would be ok, but the same couldn't be said with complete confidence for his grandfather.
