Why? On today of all days?
Anyone could see that this day was not a good day for Lovino Vargas. Not only was he angry and sad, he was very confused, too. For the brief moment that him and Alfred had shared a kiss, he thought that maybe his life was turning around. The light at the end of the tunnel was visible for a short while.
That was, until, he received the unfortunate phone call from the hospital.
Currently, Lovino was speeding down the highway trying to reach his brother and grandfather. Although he was still pissed at Alfred for listening to his phone call, he forgot about it now. Everything was replaced by sadness and regret.
I should have tried harder to save him.
I should have been a better grandson.
I should have never put so much trust into Alfred. Or anyone.
I should have known this would happen because of it.
Words flew in and out of his mind. They reminded him of everything he did wrong and everything he would take back if he could.

Meanwhile, Alfred felt more guilty than he had in a while. Thoughts similar to Lovi's floated through his mind as well.
Should I have tried to comfort him?
Should I have just left the room?
Should I have gone with him to the hospital?
He thought that everything was going so well and that Lovino had begun to trust him.
For now, though, the Italian had to be placed on the back burner of his mind, as he had just a gotten a text from a the last person he would expect right now.
I think we made a bad decision breaking up. I want you back. I still love you.
- Arthur xoxo
Of course. Arthur had chosen this time to tell Alfred he wanted him back. Now he didn't know what to do. He was sure that he was in love with Lovino, he didn't want Arthur back.
Too late. We'll talk later.
- Alfred
The uncharacteristic coldness was more than visible in his text message. Alfred was sure as hell that he didn't want Arthur back. After the way he simply smashed his heart into a million pieces and walked out, there was no way they were getting back together again. And plus, he had Lovino, right?

Sat in the waiting room was a bitter Lovino and his depressed brother. No words passed either of their lips, and they sat in silence with Feliciano's head resting on his fratello's shoulder.
Their silence was broken.
"Mr. Vargas has requested that you come see him."
Both brothers immediately shot up from their seats and followed the nurse into the room holding their grandfather.
The hospital carried the depressing smell of latex and heavy-duty hand sanitizer. The cries of small children getting thier first shots rang through the almost empty halls. Somehow, this almost heartbreaking setting really fit the mood of the day.
The Vargas brothers had never seen their grandfather looking so weak and pale. It broke Lovino's heart to see him like this. Memories of him so full of life raced about Lovi's head. Romulus Vargas was a man always full of life, love, and excitement. He was sixty years old and didn't look a day over forty-five, and to run a restaurant at this age was something that impressed most. To see him lying in a hospital bed, oxygen tank at his side, barely moving was so impossible for the young Italians to even imagine.
"I want you boys to know...none of this was your fault. I love you. I know that I won't last much longer, and I'm sorry."
The first of many tears fell on Feliciano's cheeks as he gripped his brothers hand tightly.
"Lovino," The oldest perked up at the sound of him name, and tried to hide his tear-streaked face. "Take care of Feli."
Is that really all he has to say to me?
His nonno saw his grandson's face drop and chuckled.
"There's more. Come, sit by me."
Lovino kneeled at the bedside.
"You have to know that I love you just as much as your brother. And I want you to find something that will make you happy in life. Whether it be a person, a hobbie, a pet. I want you to smile and know that you are loved."
For reasons he knew all to well, a certain loud American popped into his head.
"And Feliciano, I want the same for you. I can't leave this world without knowing my boys will be happy."
A sad smile appeared on Lovino's face. The beeps of tbe heart rate monitor slowed. The elder Vargas coughed.
Now it was Feliciano's turn to crouch. by the bedside. He took his grandfather's hand, stroking the fragile flesh with a gentle thumb. "Please...don't leave us." he whispered.
The breathing of the old man slowed and stopped. The steady and shrill beeps of the heart monitor did the same as if to prove his passing.
"R-rest in peace, nonno...Te amo." A fresh set if salty tears fell from Feliciano's amber eyes as he spoke. He rushed into his brothers open arms.
Lovino could feel every sob that racked through his fratello's chest. An embrace like this was one that they hadn't shared since they were young kids.
He held the his brother tighter and rested his head on his, crying openly.
