Lovino left Alfred's house that day in a bad mood. It wasn't his usual grumpiness, nor was it something that Alfred had done. What could it be, then?

The reason for his mood was that today was the day of his grandfather's funeral. The entire day was absolutely dreary, the hours carrying nothing but sorrow.

During the funeral, people made speeches about how much Romulus Vargas would be missed and how loved he was throughout his lifetime. Lovi did go up and make a speech as well, but the words meant nothing to him. They were simply empty sounds spoken to please others, only the empty shells of feelings. Of course, he meant it sincerely when he said that his nonno was a wonderful man and he would be dearly missed, but at this time, he couldn't put his feelings into words. He could only feel the words he wanted to express in the way that his heart fell when the thought that he would never be able to be with his grandpa again. The sound of his joyful singing, ringing through the restaurant kitchen would be missed by all the customers who stopped by regularly just for him. The sound of his hearty laugh could never float through the ears of friends anymore. There would always be in memories, though.

For the rest of the day after the funeral, Lovino simply lied on his bed. He did not pick up any calls. He did not answer the door. He did not talk to anyone, not even his fratello. He just stayed in his room and stared blankly at the ceiling. All his feelings at once filled his head.

Lovino's disappearance disturbed Alfred. He knew that today was the day of his grandfather's funeral, and he knew how hard Lovi would take it, so the American was very concerned for the well being of the Italian. With this in mind, he decided that he would check up on Lovi.

Al walked up to the front door of Lovi's apartment and knocked on the front door. To his surprise, when he forced his fist against the painted, sturdy door, it creaked open. Wow. Lovi didn't even bother to lock his door. He must really be down. The blond thought as he walked inside.

"Lovi?" he called. There was no reply. "Lovino? Are you ok?" he tried again. There was still no familiar voice to answer his own worried one. The heavy silence filled the apartment just as loud noise would. Suddenly, Alfred realized that a door had been left open just a crack.

"That must be where he is..." Al mumbled to himself. He stepped into the room that turned out to be Lovino's bedroom. But where is Lovi? Alfred answered his own question when he saw him lying on his back over top of the hastily made bed.

"Lovino? Are you ok?"

"No."

"How do you feel?"

"Nothing."

The responses he got were definitely not the ones Alfred wanted, but they were the ones that he expected. To hear him say things like that still broke his heart, though.

"Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" he asked.

"Yes."

Al was happy that there was at least something he could do to make Lovino feel better. He would do anything for him.

"Yeah? What is it?" he asked. Lovi normally would have laughed at the American's excitement. It reminded him of the eagerness of a puppy.

Lovino was quiet for a moment before he answered Alfred's eager question.

"Please lay with me. Just for a while. Please."

Al was a little surprised at the answer, but nodded and crawled into the bed, right next to Lovi. They were so close that their arms were touching. A few moments passed and the Italian sighed, and entwined their fingers together.

Alfred could feel his heart flutter at the small contact, and a lovestruck smile appeared on his lips. Even though the touch was small, it meant everything to Al.

In the quiet hours that they lied together in the un-made bed , the American made a silent promise to himself. He swore that he would always be there for Lovino, and that he would always treasure the time they spent together. Although the more he though about it, the cheesier it got, these past few months have reminded him how easy it is to lose the one you love the most. He would never again take the ones he needed the most for granted.
