Two weeks had passed since the Halloween party, and I had surprisingly gone without seeing Kendall at Milton Co. Or, anywhere else for that matter.
On the contrary, Caleb and I had been texting much more than usual.
Admittedly, I had forced myself to visit his gym more frequently these days, hoping that we'd have some not-so random encounters with each other. Although our relationship was progressing at an achingly slow pace, I was quite content in the way we were making strides in our friendship before attempting to pursue anything further than that.
Frankie: Hey butthead, I'm outside your place.
My phone buzzed as Frank's text message went through, confirming his early arrival. Briefly glancing outside of my bedroom window, I immediately spotted his signature sheen black limousine parked boldly across the street. I couldn't help but roll my eyes at how extravagant he could be at times.
Earlier in the week, my uncle had sent out invitations for an evening dinner at his city condo. My uncle's condo served as his second home where he stayed when he couldn't be bothered to commute all the way from his northern estate to business meetings in the city.
Over the last couple of weeks, I had noticed that he'd become unusually kind. It was quite a stretch from his traditionally rigid personality, but I wasn't one to complain.
After taking another five minutes to gather my things, I finally locked up my place and left the building. Due to the thin stilettos I'd stubbornly worn to complement my white pinafore dress, my feet were made particularly vulnerable to the many cracks and potholes that dwelled along the New York City streets. So, by the time I'd reached the limo, I'd generously saved myself from an embarrassing tumble more than a handful times.
I was so going to regret wearing Bottega in the morning. No matter how cute they were.
"What are you so dressed up for?" Frank quipped, as soon as I entered inside the vehicle. To my surprise, he was accompanied by a beautiful dark-skinned woman in a dazzling floor length dress.
"I don't want to hear a single word from you, Frank. You literally have a yellow suit on." I impatiently warned, after considering whether there was any truth behind his curiosity.
I didn't think I was overdressed at all. Besides, Frank was the last person I would take fashion advice from. His outfits were always over-the-top.
"Fist of all, it's beige not yellow. Second, relax Sasha, I'm just teasing you." He sighed before staring out the window, just as the car began to move.
"So, who's the lovely lady?" I questioned. The woman sitting beside him seemed rather timid in comparison to his flashy personality. Just as my eyes flickered to her, she lowered her head to silently inspect her hands.
"Oh, this is my friend, Nicki. I thought it would be nice to bring her along. She's a veterinarian." Frank proudly boasted, clearly satisfied to have her by his side—as if she were some sort of trophy. Without a doubt, he and I both knew my uncle would be impressed by her pedigree.
