He was nothing but a fallen royalty. He didn’t even get a chance to fully understand that he was the heir of a kingdom when a distant relative siezed the throne, disregarding the holy lineage. These days Kagaya’s just an owner of a tavern. He was nothing now.

But she…she’s just a glowing fire in a crowd full of water.

Her loose dress flowing along with her twists and turns, people showering her with flowers, adorning her with a crown made out of many. She was more heavenly than all the queens those royal painters potray, some even say she was the saintess their gods and goddesses had promised to send.

Like everyone in the crowd captivated by her dances, he wished for a day when he can exchange words with her, or when she enters his humble pub that can’t fit more than twelve people. It’s such a ridiculous wish, there was no possible way she would choose his, the farthest from the central town when she could settle for the popular ones.

The gods seemed to have granted his stupid wish. Because the bell rung early in the morning.

“Good morning! It’s not everyday someone comes in at 7-….” His jaw comes slacked.

“Really? That’s good, when do customers usually come in?” The visitor sat down near the counters, where he serves beverages. “I’ve been looking for sometime alone..”

Its her. Oh- oh my god it’s her what do I do-

“Keeper? Hello? Am I alone in this homey place?”

He snapped back in place, stumbling around to get to her, almost knocking over a tower of fancy wine glasses that last night’s drunkards put together. “I’m here— WOAH- yes yes I’m here! The- the pub gets full rather around lunch.”

She nodded along. “Noon? Must be the miners by the quarry no?…” She looked upward, reading the menu sign. “Is it alright if I can have those thinly cut pork slices? Perhaps with eggs?” She turned to him, he was unmoving. Staring at her and through her at the same time.

“Keeper?”

“right..oH yes! Eggs and thin pork! Give me a few minutes Madam, ill get it done.” He rushed pass the counter, to the kitchen she assumed. The little opened window connecting two rooms gave her the idea. The keeper was a clumsy man, not in the way she finds irritation in, but rather one that she finds charming. “If there’s no meat then eggs suffice, I simply need some nutrients to keep me awake today...”

“We actually have too much meat these recent days, however at the cost of that, we’re short of eggs, quite unfortunate but I’ll make it work. It’s a promise of mine Madam.”

“all…alright then, I’ll hold onto that!” The tavern turned quiet, save for the sizzling in the back. Her stage smile turning solemn, the tavern has caught her eyes since she arrived in this bustling town. After all, it was just a short walk from the town sign and a fifteen minute walk from the nearest quarry. “Ingredients are getting pricey aren’t they?” Like many, she thought it would be brimming with customers as soon as it opens in the morning.

“Hm? What was tha- oh well prices of any meat increased lately, less people are purchasing them, so now my supplier has too much meat he can’t stomach down,” Louder sizzles were heard. “Rather than letting it spoil, he gave them to me for free, I still paid him the amount I usually pay him in.”

“That’s nice of you, but generosity rarely comes by lately.” Kagaya came in to give her a pitcher and a cup, before returning to the kitchen. “He needed that money, so I paid him either way, that’s generosity too right?”

She smiled, she didn’t think of it that way. “I supposed you’re right…you work here alone?”

“Very much so Madam! The land behind me is owned, east from here is the Well, north are habitats of those small critters.” His hands were shaking, trying to put together strips of bacon neatly to a shape. This is the first time they’re conversing and he can’t believe it’s going so smooth. “By the west is the quarry path, town hall said we can’t disrupt them.”
