*Alex's POV*

Dream

I was sitting in an alley eating a piece of bread I found in the dumpster. It sounds gross I know but its all I got. I've been sleeping in this alley for a week, maybe. It's right behind a restaurant, so I get a lot of scraps. I heard the restaurant's back door open and quickly hid behind an old box, but not quick enough.
"Who's there?" I heard a woman ask. I stayed quiet. I heard her footsteps as she came closer. She peeked around the box and looked at me. I looked up at her and then back down at the ground. She was a short, black lady. Kinda big, but not fat.
"What's ya name, sweetheart?" She asked nicely.
"Alex" I said. My voice was hoarse. She looked at for a minute before she noticed what I was eating.
"Throw that old bread down and come with me. I'll get ya some real food." She said walking off. I thought about it for a minute before I stood up and followed her. We walked to the back and she made me sit down at a table across from a boy who looked to be around my age. She placed a bowl of food in front of me. I started eating and soon it was gone.
"How old are ya, Alex?" She asked handing me a glass of water. I shrugged. I don't know.
"What month and year is it?"
"June 2009." Wow. I've been gone for 2 years now. I bet my mom hasn't even noticed.
"I'm 10, then." She looked at me funny.
"Why did you need to know the month and year before you knew how old you are?" She asked.
"I ran away from home when I was 8. I had know way to keep up with the days, so I didn't know."
"Well, honey, I can't just let you live on the streets and eat trash and I certainly don't want to send you to no orphanage, how would you like to live with me and my son, ?"
"Why are you being nice to me?" I asked quietly.
"Because it's the right thing to do. You should always be nice. Why do you ask?"
"No one has ever been nice to me." I mumbled. She was shocked.
"Well, would you like to stay?" I smiled for the first time in forever and nodded. She smiled. After she locked up we walked home
