Chapter 24: The remnants of the Ancient Regime

Travelling through Kentucky through their way to home, the Quartz-Universe family was having a nice family time singing together, joking and going to landmarks to take photos. For Steven it was like he imagined when he was a kid how the trips would be if his mother was alive. Nothing could ruin that family moment that each of them wished so hardly and finally they got by a miracle. Or at least that's what they expected.

-We interrupt the broadcast to inform our listeners that the cities of Louisville and Jeffersonville in the state of Kentucky are under the attack of Gem aliens- the male announcer said.

-What!?- everyone shouted.

-The local police and military forces alongside the local super heroes are fighting the invaders while awaiting the arrival reinforcements of the National Guard, the military, G.U.N. and more super heroes. We warn our listeners to stay away from Louisville and Jeffersonville and the habitants of the cities to stay in your homes and shelters and evacuate if possible. We will communicate you when the menace is over- the male announcer said.

-Damn! We need to go to Louisville now!- Rose said.

-Let me see if I can find the fastest way to go...- Steven said searching on his cell phone –found it! We will reach it in just 20 minutes-

-Let's go!- Rose said.

Greg increased the speed and drove as fast as he could the van with the constant pressure of his wife. And Rose was right in feeling nervous, lives were at risk. So, in 20 minutes, with the sunset at the horizon, they arrived at Louisville, seeing that some building of the city were in flames and some Gems ships were flying over it with some landed and others crashed over some buildings and in the Big Four Bridge, with some US naval ships on the Ohio river and some helicopters fighting the Gem ships. Most of the Gem forces were concentrated attacking Louisville. Greg stopped at the entrance of the city and Rose went out of the van.

-Steven, protect your father while I take care of them- Rose said closing the door of the van.

-No, I'm coming with you- Steven said getting out of the van.

-Steven, no!- Rose shouted –you went angry with me because you had to solve all the problems I left, putting you under a lot of pressure and giving you unwanted responsibilities that were mine. Right now I want to atone that-

Rose's words echoed in Steven's head. She was right, in part. That Gem invasion was taking place because of her Rebellion thousands of years ago. But, the Gem kind supposed to change 3 years ago with the beginning of the Era 3. The Diamonds changed, many changed, but some others didn't and they still wanted to do the things as before while other wanted to attack the Earth as a revenge of the loss of glory of the Gem Empire after it's adhesion to the CPUP at the start of the Era 3.

But, it was really Rose's fault? She changed before everyone and tried to convince them to change by the good way, but they didn't listened, then she started a Rebellion and some joined her but many others, including her Diamond family, opposed her and fought against her. And, at that moment, it was a similar scenario, but the difference is that he was one that promoted the change on the Gem kind as her mother tried before, but he succeeded and those Gems were opposing to the change and the peace that he and his mother wanted.

Also, Steven was a nice hearted person. Even if it wasn't his responsibility to defend the Earth from the Gem invaders, he couldn't stand with crossed arms while seeing how the Gems were attacking innocent people. No, he would stand and fight against them. And, as a Crystal Gem, it was his responsibility to protect the Earth, not only from the Gem kind but form any menace, outside or inside, that could put the Earth in danger.

-No mom, is also my responsibility as a Crystal Gem. Let's put a stop to them together!- Steven said.

This surprised at first Rose, but then she glanced a Steven with a proud smile.
