Shari stood atop one of the second floor balconies. The wind was mild that evening, blowing tendrils of her dark hair away from her face and the cool night hair raising goosebumps on her skin.
However, she paid no attention to the rising of bumps on her skin. Her focus was on the three men walking across the gardens to the main gates. Particularly, her eyes followed the limping gait of a man in black, supported by a cane, the top of which sported a crow's head.
Though he limped, he asserted an air of intimidation and dominance when entering a room. Even then, she leaned against the banister, resting her elbows on the brass, and watched as Kaz walked before the two other males.
There was something about him -there were honestly many things about the bastard of the barrel, but there was just something that stuck out to her. There was something about him that held her gaze for moments longer than necessary.
Shari wasn't sure whether it was a single feature of his physique or personality, or perhaps it was just him as a whole that captured her attention so completely. She watched him until he got to the gates and then as they were opened for him, he paused and turned around.
He tilted his head upwards, bringing a hand to hold the rim of his hat. When his eyes met hers, she froze, as though being caught doing something she wasn't meant to. However, she quickly caught herself and instead, offered Kaz a small wave.
Jesper and Wylan had walked forward and through the gates, but still Kaz remained with his hand on the rim of his hat. Shari furrowed her brows and squinted, wondering why he was still standing there. She wondered if there was something he was trying to tell her.
Rather, something he was trying to show her. Her squinted eyes finally caught the gleam of something shiny poking underneath his hat. It appeared to be a chain but she couldn't tell the worth from so far away.
In less than a moment though, the youngest Havemeyer gasped and brought her hand straight to her chest. Then Kaz smiled and turned away from her, finally walking through the gates.
Her fingers ran across the flesh of her collarbone and the swell of her breasts. There was no use, no matter how many times she felt around her chest, it was bare. It wasn't like that at the beginning of the night.
Her necklace was gone. It wasn't flashy, it lacked the large jewels many expensive necklaces possessed. However, it was near impossible to miss the shimmers it produced, being imbued with tiny diamonds at every interval of of the silver chain.
How had Kaz managed to steal it without her knowing until that moment? It was damn near impossible, especially since he'd been so against any form of contact with her. Just how had he managed to get the necklace off her person?
She smiled though. Her lips stretched just a few inches as she glanced down at herself. Goosebumps still littered her flesh, yet Shari was certain it wasn't due to the cold this time around. She chuckled softly before turning to walk into her home.
