Shari returned after a few moments, just in time for the main course; a bountiful serving of different assortments of fish. Conversation shifted towards topics more business related.Kaz was pleasantly shocked at Councilman Havemeyer throwing a few questions his way, even more surprised at how much his youngest daughter knew about trading and business. From what he managed to gather, she was studying Economics at the University.
Soon after, when dessert was brought, Councilman Havemeyer asked for Kaz to join him in his study.
"You would willingly allow me into your study?" Kaz raised a brow and gave the man a look.
He knew that Havemeyer wasn't stupid, there was no way he was going to casually allow Kaz into his work study.
The large man laughed in response as he stood from the table, "Worry not, Mr Brekker. Everything worth stealing has already been transferred to somewhere much safer."
Kaz smirked and stood, following the man out. He didn't turn to look at her but he could tell that Shari Havemeyer had her eyes on him.
Kaz walked behind Councilman Havemeyer, taking note of every hallway they turned down, every door and guard they passed by. He moved silently, crookedly, eyes sharp as blades and lips in a fine line.
He couldn't help but look at the windows, the lintels, the little spaces Inej may have used to sneak in and sneak out. He looked at the dark corners she may have used to conceal herself. His lips grew tighter as images of her flittered through his mind.
No matter how much he occupied himself, she always managed to invade his mind. It was only during the dinner with the Councilman did Inej mot plague him. It made him itch to get back there.
Soon enough, the large Councilman stopped before a large oak door flanked by guards on either side, the Havemeyer family crest engraved into the wood- it was a bird with wings wrapped around a crown.
"Do you know what this crest represents?" Havemeyer asked, hands behind him and back erect, not breaking his view from the large insignia before him.
"The bird represents peace, the crown represents regality. The Havemeyers are one of the oldest and richest families on the Merchant Council, and you maintain your prosperity by not engaging in any sort of squabble with the Barrel nor with fellow merchants."
"Smart, young boy." Havemeyer said as he pushed open the doors, leading Kaz into a spacious room.
The wall to Kaz's right was all windows, heavy, dark curtains over it. The opposite end of the wall, behind Havemeyers study table was a large DeKappel of a man sitting in Ghezen's hand and writing in an open book.
There was also a DeKappel rolled up under Kaz's bed.
Majority of the floor was covered by a thick rug and bookshelves lined the wall to Kaz's left.
