"Yep, You could say she has a demon living in her head rent free." I laugh darkly
"So she's possessed? That would explain why she's so manipulative, but not why you would protect her like family." Guren says sceptically.
"She isn't possessed. A host would be a better way to describe it. The demon is always with her, but has never taken control. If what Mahiru says is true, it can't take control. It does have some influence over her, hence how she has more awareness than anyone else her age, but she's a good kid." I explain.
"Well, I guess I can believe what she told me about Mahiru then." Guren mumbles.
"I had a feeling she wasn't there to play with the kids from the orphanage. What did she say?" I ask.
"Mahiru plans to betray the Thousand Nights. She is only using them to further her experimentation into cursed gear." The black haired boy explains.
"That would explain why no one from the Thousand Nights has approached me or Shinya in order to recruit us aside from during the attack. Mahiru probably kept them away." I mutter to myself.
"Mahiru said something else during the attack: At Christmas, the world will come to an end. The trumpets of the apocalypse will sound and a virus will spread. When that time comes, a new world will arise. Do you know what that means?" Guren asked.
"I know I've heard that before. Maybe Father said something, or I read about it. I can't remember." I say quietly, even though it wasn't true. I knew exactly what it meant, and it terrified me.
"Well, if you do remember, tell me. I've gotta get back. My retainers will be worried if I'm out too late." Guren says, brushing past me, "See you at school."
"See you." I reply coolly, following him back to the front of the building where Hachi was waiting before watching the black haired boy walk away.
"What did he tell you?" Hachi asks when Guren disappears from our view.
"Not too much, just to avoid the Thousand Nights." I lie.
"Well, that should be easy enough. Let's get you home, Kureto will be mad if you miss dinner." Hachi grumbles.
"Yeah, I'd prefer not to get another lecture this week." I laugh.
Hachi leads me back towards the Hiragi complex, but I was barely paying attention. I couldn't stop thinking about what Guren had told me.
"The trumpets of the apocalypse are only supposed to sound if someone commits the ultimate taboo. Mahiru, what are you planning?"
