The next thing I know I am sitting on a rug in the middle of a classroom sourounded by other students, this time a year or so older than before. I look around, shocked and confused as to how I got there.
"What's wrong?" The girl next to me asks.
"How did I get here? We were just..." I start.
"Did you doze off again? You have to pay attention or you'll never be good enough for our Lord!" She tells me in an angry whisper.
"Oh, right. Sorry." I say to her.
The answer of a dream to explain how I had skipped the year made sense, but it didn't feel right. I don't have the chance to question it though, as someone knocks loudly on the door.
It opens to reveal the teacher who had given the announcement what felt like only moments ago. She walks up to the front of the class and waits for everyone to quiet down.
"Who do you think they'll take this time?" The same girl wonders.
"Take for what?"
"The test! You remember don't you? You really do need to stop falling asleep. They take two girls each day to be tested on the magic we have learned over the last year. The ones that fail are expelled." She explains.
"Oh, right. I think I remember that." I mutter, the concept feeling familiar but something seems off about it.
"Ginever and Abigale." The teacher says finally.
The girl next to me stands, gesturing for me to do the same. Once I do, the teacher nods and walks towards the door again. The other girl follows, as do I. The teacher leads us down hallway after hallway.
Somewhere along the way I realize that I'm not longer following the girl, she isn't there at all. Next I notice bruises and cuts covering where my legs are left uncovered by my uniform skirt and arms where my sleeves don't reach.
"Ginever?" The teacher asks as I stop to stare, wondering where the injuries came from."
I look up quickly, "sorry." I mutter.
"Please hurry up. Your opponent is waiting."
