What if I told you that one of them is still alive?" Mahiru laughed.
I glance at Jain, her face growing redder by the second as her time before the curse takes full effect draws shorter. She was already developing a fever, and I could see her shaking despite the paralysis spell still being active.
She looked so similar to the girl I had known back then, not the shaking or fever but the determination in her eyes. I knew it was her, I could sense the same demonic presence surrounding her even back then, but I had refused to admit it to myself until now.
"Remembering now are w-" Mahiru starts to say. She is manipulating me. I shouldn't touch the staff, but I don't have the mind to think with my pulse in my ear. I was going to do what she wanted, but at least I could keep the satisfaction she'd get from taunting me from her.
I reach for the weapon, barely feeling the cold metal before my senses began to slip. I try to fight back, but soon I can't feel anything, hear anything. The next thing I know, my vision is gone too.

I wake to falling, a bright void surrounding me. There was nothing near me, just white. Then, I'm sitting up in bed. Not the bed I expected, but the small cot on the floor of the preschool I used to attend.
"Wake up! The teachers said something big is happening today!" A girl yells from across the dorm room.
"What if we're getting cake with lunch today!" One girl wonders.
"Maybe we're going home!" Another exclaims.
"I hope we aren't getting in trouble." Another mumbles near me, I doubt anyone else could have heard her.
"That's enough children, time to get ready for lessons!" Says a teacher as she walked by the dorm room door, "Make sure to be on your best behavior today."
