Chapter Seventeen

My face grew hot with embarrassment as I was viciously smothered by my mother.

"Oh Gerard!" She wailed as she entered the room. I patted her back awkwardly as she leaned over both Frank and myself to give me a bone-crushing hug. Mikey trailed behind her, looking exhausted and annoyed.

I felt bad for making him be here. I was sure he missed out on a lot of school activities because of my stupid issues.

I sat up in the stiff bed as my mother was pried off of me by Mikey, who rolled his eyes at her actions.

They stood by my bed, Frank still lying next to me. Kacey entered the room with a tall, blonde man I hadn't seen yet.

"Hello, Mr.Way," the man said as he stood next to my mother and Mikey. "I'm your doctor. I'd like for you to call me Victor, but here they usually call me by my birth name." He finished off this sentence with a slight scowl, as if his coworkers were doing something annoying on purpose. Perhaps they were.

"Which is?" I asked.

"Victoria."

My eyes widened as he said this. Was it possible that I had a trans doctor? I'd always wanted to meet a trans guy, but unfortunately, either there weren't many or they felt too threatened to come out. I smiled at him warmly. "Nice to meet you, Victor."

He smiled widely at my response. "Likewise, Gerard."

"Wait, so are you a woman?" My mother asked. I rolled my eyes at her. She wasn't being rude on purpose. At least I hoped not.

The man smiled sympathetically. "No. I'm transgender. I was born a biological female, but I'm a man. Wish I could afford the damn surgery..."

I nodded in understanding as my mother gave him a weird look.

"Anyway," he said awkwardly. "shall we get this started?"

I sighed and watched as he sat down in the armchair on my side of the bed.

"So, m'am- sir, can you explain to me what happened?" My mother inquired. "All I know is that Gerard fainted and I- I'm so confused."

Her words were jumbled and quiet. I flinched as they left her mouth, her obviously shell-shocked demeanor blatant. There was a weary look in her eyes, that could've been due to the fact that she hadn't slept, or that she was worried. I was hoping for neither, but I knew something was wrong.

She sighed as she looked back and forth between Victor and me. Her eyes hesitated when we saw how Frank was holding me, but she shook it off and looked back at Victor who was flipping through the papers on his clipboard.

"Ah, here we go," he said after a while of flipping through pages. I prepared myself for what I knew was to come. I tried to convince myself that she wouldn't overreact; that maybe she's just hear what he had to say and then pretend this never happened. Somehow though, I was sure she would do quite the opposite.

"So, Mrs. Way-"

"Ms. Way."

"Er, right," he said.
