If there was one thing she hated, it was walking around at night, Aurora never felt safe and her little apartment was down by the dodgiest alleyway she'd seen. The girl had come from work, she worked late into the night and she didn't have a decent car to get around in. Aurora knew her way back home well, but her paranoia got the better of her at times and she'd take a different way to get home to make sure she wasn't attacked.
Bucky would always tell her to call him after work and always gave her spare change for the phone booths. He didn't want her to get hurt, he wanted to keep her safe and make sure she knew he was there for her. Aurora didn't always take the offer, didn't like bothering him, and didn't want to interfere with his life and enjoyment.
This was one of those times, Aurora turned down an alleyway she wasn't familiar with and hummed in annoyance at the narrow pathway she'd need to walk down. Aurora jumped as a trash can hit the ground and footsteps echoed around her.
Not wanting to be too obvious, she picked her pace up only slightly and got halfway through the scary darkness. Her mouth was covered, she was pushed against the wall, her head hit with a thud and forced to stare at a drunken-looking man.
"Weren't you told, girls shouldn't walk alone at night?"
"Give me your purse, your coat and your shoes." Aurora reached for her bag, her hands shaking as she went to give it to him, her hands slipped and it fell on the ground. Aurora yelped as she was pushed down, her skin scraped against the concrete and blood already drawn. The girl grunted as a fist was thrown against her cheek, she was dragged across the ground, her clothes being ripped on glass and rocks.
Aurora screamed for help, whimpering as she was hit along the head, causing her to stop and drift out of consciousness. Her shoes had fallen off, her attacker used them to place more wounds on her skin.
Steve and Bucky were on their way to a bar when they heard the scream, sharing a look both ran down to help whoever needed it, Bucky threw the man off the girl and started beating him senselessly while Steve aided the girl and briefly check over her. Seeing Aurora aching hurt him, he didn't realise it was her until Bucky got the man off her. Her purse was scattered across the floor, her clothes were ripped and she was sobbing in Steve's arms.
Bucky stopped hearing the familiar cry, he glanced at the girl and felt his anger return to the man. Steve read his friend's mind, he took Aurora to a phone booth and called the police while Bucky kept the man in his grasp. After dealing with the cops, Bucky told Steve to go home while he helped the brunette girl.
Bucky grabbed her shoes, purse and other items that had been scattered on the ground. Bucky carried her home, got her first aid kit and started treating her wounds before he started gently scolding her. James softly cupped her face in his hands, drying her tears, staring deeply into her eyes and smiling at her.
"Ro, no more walking home at night, call me next time and I'll come to take you home. I don't mind, I gotta look after my favourite girl. Aurora, if I don't answer after three tries, catch a cab. No more walking through dark alleyways, I don't want to wake up one morning and see in the paper that you were killed. Please, promise to do that for me?" Aurora nodded, she clung to him tightly and cried against his chest.
"Are you okay?" He whispered as he held her, the girl shook her head and took a deep breath as she went to speak.
"I'm scared, I don't get how I let that happen, Bucky... I'm so foolish."
"You didn't let anything happen, Ro, this wasn't your fault. It was that guy, he's to blame and you shouldn't carry that around with you. I won't let anything like that happen to you again." Aurora nodded, holding him tighter as she shook in fear.
Bucky stayed a few hours, he didn't want her to be alone and didn't want to think of the possibilities of what could happen if he wasn't there to keep her safe. The man left once she had fallen asleep, he planned to return early in the morning, just so he could check in and make sure she was doing okay. Bucky returned early the next day, he had purchased her favourite foods for her to keep her happy and ease her mind off the violent incident.
Seeing the bruises and wounds made him angry, this girl didn't deserve it, any past and future victims certainly don't deserve it. Bucky sat with the girl on the couch, reading a book with her that he knew brought her comfort to escape this world into a better one. Aurora was glad to have Bucky, he was always looking out for her and always doing what he could to keep her safe.
Bucky felt the girl worried too much about bothering others, he was ashamed that the girl felt that she couldn't call him. He wanted her to know that even if she was in a different country, he come running to save her.
"You know, no matter what the situation is or what I'm doing, I'll come for you?"
"I know, Bucky, you know me."
"Yeah, as much as I love your consideration, I hate it."
"I know."
