Gus's pov:

He tried to fall asleep.

He really did.

But something was eating away at him.

It was the letter he grabbed from the portal.

He didn't know how, but he just knew that this piece of paper was somehow connected to Matt. He knew it.

He sat there, waiting to make sure Hunter was asleep. He checked the time on his scroll and saw that it was about 1 am.

Hunter has to be asleep by now.

He quietly got out of his sleeping bad and cautiously walked over to the bathroom. He turned on the light and closed the door, not feeling the need to lock it.

He sat down against the wall and put his hand in his pocket to get the letter out. Then someone opened the door.

A very tired and confused Hunter stood at the doorway and asked, "Gus?... is everything okay?" You could hear just how tired He was when he spoke.

Quickly Gus shoved the letter back in his pocket and said, "Yeah, everything is great! I just couldn't sleep is all. What are you doing awake?"

"I heard something and thought that something might've been wrong."

Gus' attempt to change the subject failed as Hunter answered the question and brought his attention back to Gus.

"Are you sure everything is okay? You've seemed extremely off the past 6 months. I know we all miss home, and it's affecting all of us. But I feel like there's something else that's been up." He says, walking over to Gus.

Gus can feel the tears welling up in his eyes. "Can... can you close the door?" He asks before Hunter starts to sit down.

Concern still written all over his tired face, Hunter smiles sympathetically and nods. He closes the door and sits down next to Gus.

Gus was tired of hiding who he was. He knows how accepting everyone is, but it's such a difficult thing to do- regardless of how supportive those around you are.

He started fidgeting with the sleeves of his hoodie and took a deep breath.

"So.... um, before the whole day of unity thing happened... I.... met someone. And um, we both... we both really liked eachother."

Tears start to slip out of Gus' eyes and his breath becomes more shaky. Hunter puts an arm around him and hugs him.

"Um, I d-didn't want to tell you guys at the time because I was scared... n-not of how you'd react, or-or all of that. I was scared of... myself? Gosh, that sounds really stupid n-now that I say it outloud. But um, t-this person is... they're a guy. Um... I'm gay, Hunter."

Gus' vision was too blury from his tears to see Hunter smiling as he hugged his friend closer.

"It's okay Gus. We'll always support you, no matter what. And we'll always be by your side. Unless you go to jail for killing a man or something, but I promise I'd still visit!" He jokes, making Gus laugh just a bit

"W-whats up with you guys and saying I'll go to jail f-for killing someone!" Gus jokes back, wiping the tears from one of his eyes.

Getting serious again, Hunter ends the hug and holds Gus by the shoulders gently, "I'm so sorry you've hid this for so long. And I can't even imagine what you've been going through, being away from him for this long..."

He trails off and Gus nods and looks at his hands, the tears starting to fall again.

Hunter holds out his arms again, offering a hug to Gus. With slightly shaking hands, Gus scoots back over and hugs his friend.

Then, Gus says, "There's something else too. You remember at the shack w-with the portal earlier today?"

Hunter nods.

"W-well, the spot... where it was. Um, I went there all the t-time with... him. W-when I was looking through, something happened and you guys all l-looked away. But I saw something... I think... It sounds c-crazy... but I think I saw him... th-through the portal....  I a-also saw a piece of paper. Some part of me c-could tell that... he wro-wrote it... s-so I reached through and g-grabbed it."

He took the piece of paper from out of his pocket, his hand shaking tremendously.

He put the paper back in his pocket and told the rest of what happened.

"I didn't w-want to tell anyone. I d-don't know why... but i-if I said 'Hey, the portal works'. They'd ask about stuff and I'd get overwhelmed a-and probably cry. But I'm d-doing that now so why does it make a difference... But the note... s-some part of me knows he is connect- connected to-to it...."

He trailed off, his sobs becoming too much for him to talk.

They sit there for a while, Hunter doing his best to calm down Gus while he cried.

"Thanks for trusting me... little brother. I promise I wont tell a soul any of this" Hunter says, a few tears starting to fall from his eyes as well.

They hug eachother a bit tighter and Gus says, "Thanks for listening... big brother"

After a while, Gus calms down and his sniffles turn into sleepy breaths. Hunter realizes that Gus had fallen asleep.

He smiles to himself and picks him up, taking him back to the room. He sets him on the couch to sleep.

When they had first gotten to the Noceda's house 6 months ago, the two boys decided that neither of them would sleep on the couch. They argued over who would sleep on the couch, insisting that the other one sleep there so they'd be more comfortable. In the end, they both didn't budge, deciding that both of them would sleep on the floor in the sleeping bags Camilla had given them.

Hunter takes one of the blankets from the corner of the room and put it over Gus. He smiles to himself as he gets back in his sleeping bag and tries to fall asleep. In the end, he ended up taking some sleeping pills from the upstairs medicine cabinet and fell asleep no problem after that.

(End scene)
Sorry this chapter was a bit shorter than most. And, if you couldnt tell (which is completely okay bc i didnt make it that obvious) the noise that Matt heard about 2 chapters ago, when he was at the lake, that was the sound of the portal opening.

I felt like after last chapter, we needed some more Hunter and Gus sibling content. So I wrote some!

The next chapter will get back to Matt's point of view, so don't worry about him.

And as for these little author-commentary-things, I kind of noticed that it's becoming like a text to a group chat where I just kind of talk about random stuff that doesn't end up relating to the story sometimes. Feel free to skip them if you want, but if you read them then cool!! :D

Anyway, while I was writing the first part of this chapter my cat was laying on me, here's a picture of her;
